Hello! Is this a trans. you were going to rebuild anyway?
I know I've never heard of clear tranny fluid. Should be red. If it's that dark, it's probably got a nice "burnt" smell to it. If that's the case-look into going through it to rule out any damaged components!
Good luck!

Might be tractor hydraulic fluid. It's clear in color. http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1436

IMHO most transmission fluids have a "sweet" smell. If it is dark in color it could be old transmission fluid with burnt clutche material in it. If it is clear or pinkish in color it could be that the transmission sat for along time with little or no fluid in it and condensation built up in the pan. Drop the transmission pan and inspect the valve body. You might be able to change the filter, add fluid and drive it.

Call john Deere and find out if it is compatible with the red tranny fluid. I would guess it is heavy duty stuff and may not break down at high temps. But the folks at Deere should be able to tell you if a bit of residue fluid mix with the red stuff can cause harm.

There you go, I agree with 72. I would call JD and find out if you can mix if with Dextron. Then get all of it out you can, then go ahead and fill with the Dextron if it will mix. Sounds like it may be good fluid. How much is it, what are its properties and what are the benefits and what could be harmed. You might want just to leave it in there and buy some to have around to add later. Although, it would sure be hard for me to get used to the clear trans fluid. So its been awhile since you responded. Just curious to what you decided to do with it or found out. Let us know. Thanks
