got this 400 turbo in a 67 442 that I just bought thinking it was the original switch pitch because of the 2 wires but in pulling the plug there was only 1 contact. Ok not a deal breaker, but the tag on the passenger side reads 79-AE 21422 I have spent hours on the internet trying to find what this trans came out of. No AE designatin shows up for any of the divisions. It is the standard BOP case. I,m assuming the year is 1979. After they changed the designation to 3L80 was the divisions changed? Any clue would be helpful.

 

It is from 1979. It is not from any Buick nor is it from a Firebird.


That leaves 1979 GMC truck with diesel 5.7
1979 Olds 88-98 or full size Pontiac.

AE is a Cadillac trans. Caddys also use the BOP bolt pattern. This may actually be from a Seville with the fuel injected Olds 350.

As an FYI, the first letter of the TH400 two letter code USUALLY tells you the division (yes, there are some exceptions, like the OW transmissions used in Buick Gran Sports).

A = Cadillac (and also AM General for H1 Hummers)
B = Buick
C = Chevrolet/GMC
E = Volvo truck
F = Chevy/GMC trucks
H - Holden
J = Jeep
O = Oldsmobile
P = Pontiac
R = Rolls Royce (also Revcon motor home)
Z = Jaguar
??? = Ferrari

 

Wow got alot more info in a lot less time. I knew about Cadillac but totally forgot about the Seville with the Olds F.I. Okay if A is Cadillac then I guess E would narrow it down further say maybe Seville which would make sense with the short tail shaft. The Seville was basically a Nova. I was going to have it checked out while the engine was out anyhow so I guess I'll tell my tranny guy "make sure it's strong enough to handle between 350 and 400 hp." If they have to put more clutches in nows the time to do it then it can be made to whatever is needed to handle the engine. So just out of curiosity where was the info found designating Cadillac as A. I did find AM which was AM General. Thanks a bunch for the info guys.

I had EXACTLY the same question as you asked back in 2017. The transmission in my 1970 442 has "79 AE 44515 and I couldn't find any information anywhere on the internet until I came across your post. By the way, did you ever determine which Cadillac model your transmission came from?

having a tough time deciding my transmission. I recently bought a 1966 (supposed 442) Fremont, Ca car. Would anyone have any experience with transmission I’d tag AA-69 59190. Thank you in advance

That trans is from a 1969 Cadillac, used in every RWD model except the Model 75 limousine. It will be a long tail or possibly the Caddy-only extra long tail trans.

Another Fun Fact: the Dopplemayr "Sunnyside Double" ski lift at Mad River Glen ski area in Vermont utilizes a T.H. 400 transmission as part of its backup drive.
