1972 Cutlass LGT 700 5 Speed Conversion from Auto - Shifter Question
Hello,
We are about to install my rebuilt 350 and LGT 700 5spd back into the rolling chassis/shell. They make an offset shifter location for this transmission so this will be very close to the factory shifter location.
The car was a non-console car with bench seats and it will stay that way. I have seen a few factory cars with a bench seat (no counsole) and a standard transmission and I am going for that look.
Does anyone know if this would be the correct shifter boot? Also, what 'hog leg' would be the best use to try to get a factory look?
Here is the link for the boot...sometimes I just dont trust the parts companies. https://www.opgi.com/cutlass/1972/dr...fters/CT20123/
I'm not very well versed in this so I apologize for any mistakes.
Thanks

Hello,
Also, this was an auto car originally but the Legend transmission will not require any changes to the stock tunnel.
For a standard trans on a benchseat car, was there an additional piece of sheetmetal for the shifter and boot?
OGPI has this...

I will be installing a Legend 5 Speed in a 70 that's an original 4 speed bench car in the next several days or so....

Thanks Qwik - I picked mine up from Bowler as well...they were great to work with. Does yours have an additional piece of sheet metal on top of the trans tunnel already or is it just a hole in the tunnel with a boot?

Just so you are aware, the LGT700 may fit in the tunnel, but the driveline angles may also be terrible. A friend has a '72 Monte with an LS7 and LGT700, and he had to use a CV joint driveshaft because there was no way u-joints would tolerate the driveline angles.
His car is also significantly lowered, which hurts driveline angles. It was a factory bench seat/automatic car... the dealer he bought it from sent him the wrong shifter configuration, so what he had to do for a shifter probably isn't applicable to yours. It turned out pretty slick though. He used a generic Hurst shifter boot, I'll ask him for a link.

My friend said he bought some of his conversion parts from this guy:

He used a standard non-console hump with that trim ring and boot.

Just for some additional information, the hole and sheet metal hump that Olds used were the same parts for console or non-console applications. The boot going through the floor was also the same. If you had a console in the car, the chrome shift handle had an offset bend to get the handle to come up in the center of the console. Without the console the shifter handle was more in line with the actual shifter bolted to the left side of the trans. So the boot in your first photo is correct for all applications. There was a second boot located in the console but it was a second boot and did not seal to the outside.
