Pulling the steering wheel on a 69

Pretty new to the forum. I introduced myself in the Newbe area. My son and I just acquired a 1969 Toronado as a project car!

We hit our first stumbling block... Need to take the steering wheel off. I borrowed a puller from Auto Zone. Tried both the 5/16th course thread and the 5/16th fine thread. Neither seemed to thread into the steering wheel. The threads in the steering wheel look to be in good condition, and I tried new bolts with good threads. Does anyone know the actual thread size in the steering wheel that the pull bolts go into?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

I believe I've got a loose 1970 Toro steering wheel, but couldn't lay my hands on it. I did check with a 1969 Cutlass wheel and 5/16 by 18 threads fit, which should have been your coarse threaded bolts. I bought a cheapo Harbor Freight puller and it worked fine until I bent one of the two small bolts So I went to the hardware store and purchased better quality bolts.

So all that to say I'd look a little closer at the bolts and thread holes in the wheel. I think you may have had the correct ones.

Thanks John. I chased the threads with a 5/16-18 tap and that cleaned up the threads enough to work. Thanks again!

Its black, but its a rim blow wheel that needs restored and its from a tele column. If you'd like to see pictures I'll look for it next weekend. Price would be cheap, shipping overseas would likely be the biggest cost. John
