Toro 67: Removing Harmonic Balancer Nut

Very possibly a trivial question but.. When removing the harmonic balancer nut there has to be a mechanism for avoiding the engine from rotating, correct?, it look obvious to me, but the CSM do not mention it at all. if Yes to the question please advise best way to do that. Best Regards. Raul.

I don't think there is anything. You need an impact wrench.

Remove the #1 spark plug and use a length of nylon rope in the combustion chamber with the piston at TDC.

Glenn: Thanks, but that I do not have!

Olds64: Really?, That's a first for me!, I will try if nothing else comes across, wonder what they were thinking when they wrote the CSM!

Actually, go 50*-60* clockwise beyond TDC of the #1 spark plug, put the nylon rope in the cylinder and then rotate the engine CCW to remove the nut. That way you're pushing against both of the valves while closed.

Jesse, I was going to question your first post since TDC would leave no room for the rope. I have heard of using the rope trick but have never done it. I would be sure and leave some rope hanging out the spark plug hole so you don't have to fish it out of the cylinder.

You can use a breaker bar against the ground and blip the starter, have done it several times.

Don't forget to unplug the coil wire.

When I did the engine in my Wifes car I made a tool just for this purpose. It bolts to the damper and hits one of the brackets on the front, cant remember which one now.

Kent Moore Tool J-8614, which is basically a long bar with the end designed to bolt to the harmonic balancer. I wasn't going to pay stupid money for one so I made my own by welding a bar to an old crank pulley. I've been using that tool since the late 1970s. Keep in mind that while an impact wrench will get the bolt off, you still need to hold the crank to properly torque it when you put it back together.
