Correct Front Sway Bar Bushings?

I need a lead on the correct 31/32" bushings for the front sway bar on my OE 1969 Cutlass S. Ordered some from Rock Auto and Amazon, and all of these are not the correct shape for the OE brackets, and about 3/4" longer than the correct ones, so there is no chance of compressing these. Ordered from Fusick, and they are selling the same incorrect Moog ones. The bushing diameters aren't correct, either. The 15/16" ones are too small, and the 1" ones are too big (about 1/32" too big which makes sense for a 31/32" bar). I could swap to a bigger bar because aftermarket bushings and brackets seem to be available, but I just want to keep this thing OE as possible and get the correct bushings in there if possible. As you can see, the bushings are in bad shape. If there just are no correct bushings, a 1-1/8" bar it is, that seems like a good size, and should clear the idler arm. Thank you in advance for the assist, and hope your long weekend is a sunny one!

I had the same issue with my '72 Supreme so I went with Energy Suspension part #9.5158R and they worked for me. Brackets are included so you can use those as well.

I looked up that part number, and those say a 7/8" bushing. That is too small for a 31/32" sway bar. I cannot get a 15/16" wrench on the bar, and that is bigger than 7/8." The 1"wrench fits save for 1/32" of slop. My micrometer says 31/32, too. Unless this is considered a 1" bar, and I just need to use an aftermarket 1" bushing and bracket kit and hope they squeeze down snug. I have some 1" kits left over from other projects, but there is still too much slop in there for me to feel comfortable installing it like that, was hoping there was a direct fit, at least from the specislist vendors.

I'm not sure I have EVER seen the CORRECT listing for front sway bar bushings by any vendor &/or manufacturer. I had same issue w/ my '71 CS. I had to order one or two Moog sets before I got it correct. For the life of me I can't recall if I saved that part number. I'll do some sleuthing, if I find it I'll post it.

BTW, I do believe it's a 1" diam. bar.

Thank you for that info chief. Looks like 31/32, and assuming the 1" bars came on bigger cars, maybe Toronado. That NOS bushing looks like the Moog ones in shape, can't see squashing it into the OE bracket, but maybe my eyes are tricking me. Worth a shot. If it works, I'm good!

You have a 4200 series vehicle. PIM application lists (the car was assembled and born with) a 0.937" stabilizer diameter (Part #398499) & Bushing Part #388294. Unless someone has changed the OEM Part #398499 to something else, then Part #388294 is the correct sized bushing.

3667 should be a Cutlass V8 convertible, and 31/32" was on there, my bad on omitting convertible, but looks like the same bushing size, so worth a shot. I found an NOS photo of the brackets with those bushings, I think those long bushings mount vertically (long aspect up and down), and are supposed to compress. Maybe the slip fit does squash that much, guess I'll try it.

They require some significant maneuvering with steady pressure to engage the bolts through the brackets into the frame. NOTE: I have highlighted the orientation of the bushings in the diagram (above).

Bushing slit towards front of car, stabilizer bar w/ identification forming on RH-side of car & bolts torqued with vehicle weight on the ground.

While it's no longer needed the Moog Master Catalog has 2 listing as follows.

15/16" or smaller swaybar is part # K5241.

1" or larger swaybar is part # K5253.

This information is from an older catalog however when I checked they were available.

Just another opinion thrown in - Put that bar in the attic and put a 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 bar on, the positive difference will be noticeable. You’ll have lots of time to search for the correct bushings so the next owner can pull em out of the trunk if he wants to put them on. Not being a smart ***, it’s a 30 minute R & R bolt on if originality were to matter and the bigger bar will keep the front end flatter when maneuvering.

Vista Cruisers have a bigger diameter than Cutlass/442.

My thoughts also. Ordered a 1 1/8 setup from OPGI. A common bushing size is way more future proof. Haven't installed it yet. One of the mounting holes is stripped, so need to tap to 3/8 and get a bigger bolt, assuming course thread. Will take any advice out there if this is not the ideal approach. Doing some brake and wheel stuff currently, then will get back to the sway bar. At least the car can be driven without the front sway bar installed. It does indeed handle like a Spanish galleon like this...
