please help me out
I got a engine lift today, as some of you have figured out by now im a complete newbie to all of this and all of you have been real cool taking the time to answer my questions...
Anyways my buddys coming up on saterday to pull the 350 which is pretty much as torn down as its going to get

( now both fenders are gone, to worried about paint (: )
Id like to pull the engine with the tranny because its going to need work as well and looks like leaving it connected to the block might make life easier for me.
Where do i start?
can someone kind get me started with a bit of a walk thru.. please
i know the general process but was looking for something directed a little more towards a olds 350 with a 350 trans
thanks!

- Remove shroud and radiator, remove fan.
- Make sure hoist can go high enough to get engine out.
- Remove everything that looks like it might be holding the engine on, including wires and cables.
- Remove distributor (unless you're really sure you won't smash it against the firewall, in which case you can remove it after you smash it against the firewall).
- Lift engine.
- Watch nose rise higher.
- Watch nose rise even higher.
- Watch front wheels begin to lift off the ground.
- Realize you forgot to remove speedo cable / throttle linkage / starter wires / <insert item here>
- Repeat step 3

If you have clearance issues with the engine hoist, you could always take off the rad, rad support and bumper. then it's just a straight out the front type move. I know all that is a lot of extra work, but it gives you ultimately the most room to get in there and move it straight out without a lot of lifting. Just a thought.
I want to pull the trans with the engine.. I have a 2 ton hoist, ive disconnected everything so far.. Starter drive shaft all hoses and cables power steering and tranny from the support brace..Next step is the engine mounts? Unless i missed something Do i remove the bolts into the motor or the nuts on the frame side of the mount..

HAHAHA im sure ill be removing it after i smash it

A little trick I learned many years ago when faced with a rented hoist that just would not lift any higher-
Deflate the front tires. That will give you several inches additional clearance.
After that little debacle I went and bought my OWN hoist. Got tired of rental shyt that worked half-assed if it worked at all.

I would pull the left fender and radiator core support. It makes it a whole lot easier, and we are not talking a bunch of bolts either. Mark the shims as to where they go and bag them. There are 2 long bolts going thru the motor mount to frame bracket, just remove those. Remove the two trans bolts. Then doublecheck for the trannie shifter linkage, transmission cooling lines, cables, exhaust manifolds, all wiring, etc.... It is really easy to get it out, and putting it back in usually takes 3 times as long.
Thanks everyone, i got it out last night... Well really its just kinda floating in the engine bay probly going to remove the nose of the car to make it easier.. Im doing this by myself so anything to make it easier im gunna do!
you did cap the rear of the tranny right? because once it starts to tilt all that red tranny fluid will be coming out where the drive shaft yoke used to be makes a big mess, if it is already messy you can get a big bag of cat litter at sams club cosco or the like cheaper then speedy dry.

I don't know why guys remove the trans and motor together.
I prefer to get underneath the car and remove everything as a separate assembly.
After removal of the transmission the motor can easily go straight up and out, where as with the trans installed you need to really work to clear the radiator support.
You'll need to have the legs and boom of hoist extended all the way for trans/engine removal.

I have this plastic cap that fits a couple of trannys they sell caps for under 20 bucks u could probably use a torque converter cap, glad bag and duck tape, PVC cap from home depot etc etc
It's easier to pull engine and tranny at the same time. The whole front end comes off pretty easy, less than 2 hours. If your doing headers, it's also alot easier to fit them without leaning over a fender. It's easier to re-marry the trans, add a new torque converter, etc... when the trans is out of the car.
Pulling the nose prevents major scratches on good paint, don't ask me how I know.

Since the subject came up, I just wondered what other folks were using. Thanks!
My favorite method though is. 1st. Grab a cold beer. 2. Pour it into a red solo cup. 3. Drink it down while you enjoy the fruit of your labor. 4. Grab the empty cup., And tape it to the tail shaft. That by far is the best stress free method.
