Would someone please help me learn how to decode the trim tag on a 1972 442 or please tell me where to look to find out how. THANKS SO MUCH!!!

If you can find a shop manual it should tell you how to do this in the very first chapter...i think

 

the year one catalog has the decoder in the front pages....

 

If you post the info on the tag someone can probably provide that info for you.

I did a quick search for vin's and came up with this info
Oldsmobile 1972

1st digit - Make. (3) Oldsmobile

5th digit - Engine Code. (H) 350 2bbl V8 160 HP, (J) 350 2bbl V8 175 HP dual exh, (K) 350 4bbl V8 180 HP, (M) 350 4bbl V8 200 HP dual exh, (U) 455 4bbl V8 250 HP dual exh, (V) 455 4bbl V8 270 HP dual exh, (X) 455 4bbl V8 300 HP.
6th digit - Model Year. (2) 1972
7th digit - Assembly plant. (G) Framingham, MA, (M) Lansing, MI, (R) Arlington, TX, (Z) Fremont, CA
Last 6 digits - Sequential production number
