350 Mech Fuel pump 12 PSI

On my 72 CS the furl pump was leaking so bought a new one. Cranked the engine and let it idle and the Quadrajet started overflowing. Would run smooth at 2000rpm but would flood the carb at idle.
Been having some issues with the Q-jet so put a known good Holley 650 on it. It loads up at idle but clears up after a short drive. After cool down it again loaded up at idle.
Finally borrowed a pressure tester and the pump is outputting 12 psi. HUH ?????????????????????

The Oreilly pump was for a stock 350 but shortly thereafter discovered that the engine is actually a 307 replacement by the previous
owner.

Question: Should a stock 350 mechanical pump output be 12 PSI? Did I get the wrong pump or a bad pump?

If it matches the number of lines that came on the car, it won't care whether it is a 307 or 350. It sounds like a defective pump, I have only experienced the end, a new pump that couldn't keep up with a stock 307!

High pressure has been reported in a lot of new fuel pumps. Carters seem to be the worst.

I would think 6 psi would be more like it for your Quadra jet.

6psi would be more like it for just about any carb.

Thanks guys for confirming that 12psi is too high. The Oreilly pump was their house brand so who knows the mfg.

I ordered a Delphi MF0024 which shows a 5psi rating on RockAuto to replace the Oreilly's pump

I had exactly the same issue with a pump from NAPA some years ago. Exchanged it and all was as it should have been, problem solved.

Same here with Carter pumps, but it took a three pumps to get one that didn't put out over 10 psi. As Joe said, there was some sort of issue going on.

Oh NO !!!!!!!!!

The Delphi pump I ordered is not threaded deep enuff to seat the double flare. Tried 3 different flare nuts. I'm going to grind the first thread off of a nut and see if that will allow it to seat.

Nah. Pump is going back

I still have the first O'reilly pump whose output is 12psi. So...I'm going to reinstall it along with a regulator. I need to finish the work on this car so I can move on to the other 4, all of which need nit picking minor stuff like trunk seals, tires, TV cable adjustment, spot paint repairs, and one biggie: TH350 repair/

You guys know the drill.

I had a similar issue quite a few years ago, 2 different Carter pumps pegged my gauge at 10 psi, so I finally installed a regulator. Jump forward several years, that pump failed, so I bought a new one and it put out the correct pressure, so no longer any need for the regulator.

I bought this Carter from Summit for my '67/400ci 2-years ago as a back-up. From what I've been reading here it sounds like it will be a crap shoot if I ever end up needing it?

I bought from the local NAPA so it was easy to return under warranty. The first one, that is. Then I just bought a regulator from a forum member for I think $10 so I didn’t have to mess with it any more.

Sounds like you made a couple of smart moves to avoid or deal with the issue.

I thought Carter was a reputable brand when I bought mine, and had no clue there was a known issue at the time. I also don't have a clue what Carter's warranty is on their fuel pumps, but I do have the original purchase documentation. I'll have to look up what their warranty is. What I really hope is that I never have a need for it!

I may have to put on my inline gauge with my current Carter fuel pump just before my Qjet. I did have flooding issue but that fuel pump died breaking in my current cam. Good to know this is an issue.
