Fuel pump pressure to high 9 psi

I have a 1969 cutlass convert 350 2bbl all original which I have restored. I started having issues with idle just after the rebuild. I replace the carb; twice and am still having issues. I finally believe I have it figured out the carb continues to fill with gas at idle. So i check the pressure coming out of the fuel pump; showing between 9-10 PSI. I am looking to replace the fuel pump but am concerned about having the same issue as many fuel pump providers do not show the pressure etc...any ideas providers that you think may work. This is an an original car so concerns about adding regulators to be able the adjust the fuel pump pressure are not really an option. Looking for ideas...

The Olds service manual says that the pump pressure should be 5-7 PSI (some manuals show 5-6 PSI). Some cars have return lines; some pumps have internal bleed valves. There may be some congestion. On the old pumps (1964 - bolt together) if you didn't like the pressure, you could open it up and change the spring. However if originality is important, this will not work. You could request the information from the manufacturers, but expect an uphill task with questionable accuracy. I'm afraid that I don't have a really "good" solution with the constraints.

A correct pump is available I believe from Fusick. I bought a pump for a 69 442 engine and the pressure is fine at 7 psi but 4 bbl for that year was a little higher. I believe yours should be in that 5-6 psi range. Check them out first.

You have a bad fuel pump.

Replace it and you will be fine.

Any auto parts store should have a replacement for less than $20.

Could not put a pressure regulator in the line to control the psi going into the carb?

How many lines on your pump? Do you have the fuel line to the carb plus a vent line? I just looked at RockAuto and they show either a 2 line or 3 line pump for the 350 and they don't break it out for 2 or 4 bbl. So I guess the pump was the same for both carb options. Both pumps at RockAuto are made by Airtex. The 2 line pump was just under $23 and the 3 line was just under $26.

Eric,
Locally I've been running into problems with most of the parts stores not having parts for these cars in stock. Needed a fuel pump for the 69 442 and all 5 parts stores around me, 4 of them major chains, all told me 5-7 days plus shipping costs. Fusick had them in stock so I had it the next day with std shipping. I'm sure the low demand has them removing parts for cars of this era from their shelves.

Wow.

Around here it's no problem. If it's not in stock, they can generally have it the next morning, no extra charge. And that's with national chains, like NAPA, Advance Auto, and CarQuest.

Weird how there can be regional differences for this sort of thing.

Yes, that is odd. I tried both NAPA and Advanced Auto and got that 5-7 day lead time. My NAPA is usually pretty good on most things but not the fuel pump for some reason. In fact RockAuto doesn't even list a fuel pump for a 69 442 or Cutlass with a 400 motor. Yeah, I know the 400 wasn't available for a Cutlass but they do show that engine in their drop down menu for a Cutlass. They do show a pump for a 455 but the photo is not the correct pump for the 400. I suspect the photo they show in not correct and the listing is correct for the 400 and 455. Odd.

Just to clarify...you have installed the new fuel pump and when you test the fuel pressure at the carb you are still getting readings of 9-10 PSI? And this is causing fuel to spill out of the carb? Where did you buy the pump and what brand/part number is it?

This may sound like a dumb question but I thought it was worth asking. You don't have an electric fuel pump between the mechanical pump and the tank, do you?

Any chance the test gauge is not accurate and the problem could be with the carb?

Brian

Yeah, a stock pump just should NOT be able to go that high.

I agree with what has already been said. First verify the gauge being used to check the pressure. If it is not accurate you will be chasing the wrong problem. As with so many situations, an accurate diagnosis should be made before changing parts.

I'm sure OP would find your info useful if you could track him down. He hasn't posted here in 12 years, though.
