Wrong water pump gasket?

Hi all,

I've had water pump leaks before under pressure after an install - but today - the thing leaks just when I fill it before engine start. I must have screwed something up pretty good. Did I use the wrong gasket? The kit came with three but I picked the one I thought fit best. The only other issue might be the pitting on the timing cover. Wasn't terrible but was definitely there. I didn't use any additional sealant, just the dry gasket.

Whatta ya think? Thanks!

I always match the gasket to the pump and use gasket sealer on both sides. I don’t think I have ever installed a water pump gasket with no sealer.

I've found RTV (specifically Ultra Black) to solve any pump/timing cover seal issues.

I had a heck of a time when I did the 307 in my Wife's Riviera. Turned out that the AC Delco pump I got was made wrong and would not seal ??? Do you have your old pump and gasket to compare to ?

I always use Permatex Aviation Form a Gasket on that type of setup.

Yes it could be the wrong gasket, been there. Agree w/all above to sealant on the gasket.

If this is a 350 w/ac it is 99% the wrong gasket. I ran into the same issue. They give 3 gaskets and they all appear to be the same however there is a slight difference in the one that is needed for ac cars. The one that I used is a Felpro 35065. I had the exact same issue as you, leak in the same spot prior to start up. Hope this helps!

Thanks! It was the wrong gasket! You can see in the pics the little space that was not covered by the gasket I chose. I saw that the bolts lined up and went with it. Dumb me. Also shown is the right gasket now reinstalled. No leaks on fill up now. Will start tomorrow hopefully.
