Water pump gasket

Water pump gasket

Is a gasket sealant required for a replacement water pump

Technically, no. If the sealing surface is less than perfect a little sealer won’t hurt. I use a very thin layer just to hold the gasket in place. It’s kinda hard to maneuver the pump around the balancer, hold the gasket in place, and start the bolts with 2 hands. Having the gasket stuck to the pump is a big help.

I will use the copper spray for gaskets like this. I'm not a fane of silicone with a gasket because it just tends to make a mess.

Use the spray tack/glue on the water pump face. Then use a thin layer THIN LAYER on the engine side. You will thank me at the next pump removal.

I do the same with most gaskets including the valve covers. The gasket comes right off the bigger part...the engine and stays with the removed part making cleaning and reapplication much more professional.
