timing marks on 86 307

got an 86 cutlass with the stock 307 motor. stripped doen no ac emissions holly 600 cfm carb now ware i did away with the stock qjet and all the electronics i have to swap a vac advance distributer no big deal i got it
but i was checkin the timing a wile ago n i noticed ware most places say there should b a guage theres just a pointer and on the ballancer theres just 1 notch and when i stuck the timming light on it the noch on the ballancer is about an inch or so above the pointer

so my question is should i line up the pointer and notch. i know my 88 ranger is that way.

also it feels a bit sluggish im assuming could b the timing

engine runs good but its not much faster then strait 6 in my f150

You turn the engine by hand until the #1 piston reaches the top of it's travel.
The mark on the balancer should match the 0 mark on the timing pointer.

This tells me that you have the wrong timing tab.

Some of the metric oldsmobiles had small balancers and some had the regular size.

Sounds like you have a regular balancer, and a pointer for the small one.

can i get that guge from classic industrys and replace my pointer with it.
not many sbo engines in junk yrds round here and most are 6 cylenders. so if i can swapp the pointer for the guage it be easyer and cheapper then the balancer
yea guy who had the car b4 me used it as a drag car with a 434 small block then he swapped the original motor back into it but i dont know what he slapped together on it. ive been restoring it and found some rigged stuff on it so i believe what u say.
