Drill point marks ( "Punch marks" )

9-27-08 058.jpgOK, here's something I learned years ago from an engine assembler who worked in Olds engineering.
Have you ever wondered about what looks like a drill point mark ( btw my friend called them
"punch marks") on the intake machined surface of some heads or on the machined surface of the
engine ID pad on the block? I was told that It was for quick ID on certain heads or blocks durring
assembly. For instance. Big valve heads in 71 and 72 have a drill point mark. A 72 W-30 4spd.
car I restored had a drill point mark on the ID pad on the block. I don't know if it was for the
manual trans crank or for the W-30 engine. I included an old picture of that one. I've never seen
anything written about these marks. So if any of you find them Please share where you found them
and what car you found them on. Cheers! ~BOB
