My '84 88 takes longer to start if it was sitting overnight. It usually takes three tries. Does the gas drain back a ways and it takes longer for the fuel (pump?) to get back up to the carb?
Hmm... It's always been 2 pumps of the gas pedal and 1 crank to start my 85 for the last 9 years unless it sat for more than 2 weeks. See if you have any vacuum leaks, bad egr, and vacuum test your choke controller. your choke butterfly may be sticking or hanging up as well.
Are you using the factory fuel filter? It has a anti-drain back function.
But usually the main wells are porous and leak fuel. A little epoxy works here, but requires removel and dissassembly of the carb. I've tried to link a photo of what I'm referring too. If it doesn't work go to my gallery.

Thanks Don71. I just put a new filter in it a few months ago. Picked it up at Advanced. I'll bet it is draining back somehow. I won't worry about it for now. The few extra seconds starting is no big deal. The pics were great.
