shaking my head

1985 delta 88.

I changed the valve cover gasket. Didn't label the hoses or anything. Mistake I know.
I start my car and it cuts on and then shakes real rough, carb makes a popping sound and then it spits out gas at the top. Can anyone help me?

Sounds like you have plug wires switched. Did you only do one side? If so, follow the firing order (using the ones you did not remove as reference) around the cap and sort it out.

You will have to find Top dead center , compression stroke of # 1 cylinder, see what wire the rotor points to and connect it to #1 cyl. Then follow around the cap and connect the rest. I am not good at explaining procedure, so someone else jump in and point him in the right direction.
I take it you removed all wires from their plugs.

Ok, nobody spoke up yet, so I will give it a shot. Remove distributor cap leaving plug wires hooked up. Remove plug from #1 cyl. Put thumb over hole. Have someone bump the starter until you feel pressure pushing on thumb. Turn engine and when timing mark lines up to zero, stop. (should be close to when you feel pressure) Look at distributor rotor, see what wire in cap it aligns with. This is #1. The rest go in firing order counter-clockwise around cap. I believe yours is 18436572.
Another way to make sure is to turn engine with valve cover removed and watch #1 intake valve. When it closes, turn engine to align marks.
Do you have a service manual? If not, get one.

Beware that the timing mark shows up at both the TDC of the compression stroke, and of the exhaust stroke of the #1 piston. Looking at the valves/rockers will tell you which it is.

Ask if any of this is unclear. Happy to help.

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 with 1-3-5-7 on the drivers side, and 2-4-6-8- passenger. (both front to back)

assuming you did not take the wires off the cap, just find the pattern (according to proper rotation!) #1 and 2 will be the longest wires, so find a long wire that can go to the drivers side, followed by the shortest wire on the other side, then a medium for the passenger side and keep it going, then a medium wire to the divers side (#3) and so forth

It's the Chebby motors that are bass-ackwards...

They both have the distributor at the wrong end of the engine.
