How do you remove the oil slinger & timing gear?

Today I have a new front cover, gaskets, timing gear & chain set. I tried to take the oil slinger & timing gear off of the crank shaft with a 3 jaw puller, but there is not enough clearance to get the jaw around the timing gear before they hit the block behind it. The service manual called for a tool part # BT-6610 or J-25287 is there anyway to get these off without the special Olds tool & how do I get them back on? It is a 1984 307 which has a larger gearset and chain compared with older V8's 83 and Back. Thanks Jackson

I have never worked on a 307, but the 330-455 I've had apart the slinger slides off by hand. Then I've unbolted the gear from the cam, gently pried on each side and 3:00 and 9:00 until it became loose. Then I wiggled it back and forth until I could pull it off by hand. If the 307 is different someone with experience on those will have to speak up. John

As said, the slinger should slide right off. The crank gear does need a puller, get a smaller two or three jaw puller. I had no issues or anything different than removing gears on a 307 vs any other Olds V8.

I've done several 307 timing chains. Yes the slinger comes off. There is actually a Kent-Moore tool for the crank gear.

Just want to add that if there is a lot of miles on it the slinger will get glued on pretty good. Just pry on it a little or tap it with a small hammer and it should come off.

A lot of guys will frown on this but if you are replacing the small gear and you have a small sharp cold chisel, put the chisel between two teeth and smack it pretty good with a hammer and most of the time it will crack the factory gear and then you can pull it off almost by hand.
