Question HEI wiring up for older olds

here we go again, in a 1965 olds cutlass w/ 1975 olds 350 am thinking that from the batt connection on the hei to the pos relay on the fender well w/ a cut off switch in the wire betwwen the two this would be a two fold set up. one. thief deterant, two. gives the hei the 12 volts to operate, am I ok with this thinking?..... jim trying to keep it simple as am still running the externial regulated alt.....jim

That would work but you may get tired of reaching into the engine compartment every time you need to start the car, especially in winter time, plus you draw more attention to yourself and someone is bound to notice that activity. If the person you are protecting the car from as a potential car thief notices that activity they will know right where to look for the cut off switch. You might want to put the switch inside the car hidden someplace.

This would work. For the under dash switch I would use a key switch, the type where you can remove the key in the off or on position. First place the thief is under the dash.

I was thinking under the drivers seat, by the track lever would be a good candidate for a keyed switch location, if it were tucked up out of site it would be the last place a thief would be looking...just a thought.

you know a key switch sounds like a do able thing, and makes the car harder to steal, but using a 12 volt source is ok for hei? as removing the ballist wire requires unwrapping the harness and mine is very good shape plus I have an external alt and hei requires a internal regulator, so not to cook the modual, so this set up would be ok?...jim

I've never heard this before. You should just have to run 12V ignition to the HEI distributor to make it work.

I think you don't have to worry about the internal/external regulator problem, I haven't heard of that either. Where did you hear that?
