Looks like a 350 OLDS block.
What number or letter is on the head by the #1 spark plug hole?

They don't really decode like that. The heads are 71 units but to confirm the year of the block you'll have to look at the machined pad below #1 spark plug and tell us what is stamped there.

is it a big 7 with a little a after it or just a big 7

sometime the little a is hard to see if it is covered with grease. if it is 7 it is 71 if it is 7a it is 72. this is for the heads not the block.

The little 5 doesn't mean anything important.
The 7A indicates 1972 heads.
You still need to look at the machined pad on the other side of the engine under where the other head is marked.

Now i have looked on the heads under the "headcovers".
The didgets are on head #1 CDF 409 147 / 146

The didgets are on head #2 CDF 409 147 -139

I dont know if the / and - are slash and minus marks or if its the heads of a screw?

I did another filmclip of the heads.

And then i found another numer on the engine. Se picture.

Looks like
a big 6
then number 67 under it. And then CDF under.

OK you are missing what I'm saying. On the drivers side find the 7A on the head and then look on the block for a flat machined pad. There will be some numbers stamped, not cast, there. Get a good pic of those and we can tell you what year the engine is.
Right now the best guess would be 1972 because that's what the heads indicate.

I dont know what you mean by "machined pad"? And also "not cast"?

But i have now removed the whole cylinderhead. Maybe we can found something there. Watch the clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDvABq9kLUw

Look for a flat pad about 2" long on the block just below where the head would sit that had some numbers stamped on it, not cast.
