Choosing the right cam for 350 rocket

Please help. I am rebuilding my 70 350 rocket and I would like to install Comp Cam 268H complete kit (Camshaft, Lifters, Timing Chain & Gears, Valve Springs, Spring Retainers, Spring Locks)
Camshaft specs:
Operating Range:1500-5500 RPMDuration Advertised:268° Intake / 268° ExhaustDuration @ .050'' Lift:218° Intake / 218° ExhaustValve Lift w/1.6 Rockers:.456'' Intake / .456'' ExhaustLobe Separation Angle:110°
Right now I have a Edelbrock Performer Intake, holley 570cfm Street Avenger, Hooker ceramic coated headers, flowmaster exhaust. I am also installing a TCI Saturday night special Torque converter.

Would this be a correct setup??????
Also does anybody know if timing chain in Comp cam's kit is a double roller or would Cloyes true double roller be a better choice???

Are you changing the pistons and if so which ones are you using? It might like a little more carb.

Stock pistons. Engine has 42,000 original miles and heads were never taken off.

I tried that 268 Comp cam when my car was still on the street. I consider it one of the worst cams for Olds out there. Personally I would go with the Cloyes set up.

That cam has a lot of duration compared to lift. It is only my opinion, but I believe that cams with more lift relative to duration are better in Oldsmobiles. Crane, Engle, Lunati, Bullet, etc all are popular Olds cams. Just for comparison, the Engle 16-18 in my car has 210/216 @ .050 but with .472/.488 lift, Also, it is on a 112, not a 110. Do you (or anybody else) know the piston dish size in the stock 350 for that year?

Diameter Nominal Outside 3.8685"
Length Overall 3.490"
Top of the piston to Center of Pin 1.738" - 1.742"

Maybe Lunati Voodoo would be a better choice??
  • Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 256/262
  • Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 213/219
  • Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .485/.499
  • LSA/ICL: 112/108
  • Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
  • RPM Range: 1000-5300

I am not sure of your actual compression ration, but IMO, that Voodoo would be a MUCH better choice, especially in a driver without a lot of gear. The ramps are very steep on those, so they kinda "act" smaller. You might sacrifice a little top end, but the throttle response and drivability should be better. Again, IMO. And also depending on the Cr.

I won't know 'till I take the heads off and see the piston notches but I think it's 9.0:1

I am rebuilding the engine so while I have it out of the car I want it to upgrade the cam and couple of other things.

In your rebuild are you going to hone and re-ring and keep the stock pistons are replace them? Upgrading the cam is certainly a good idea, IMO, as the stock one is quite mild. Somewhere in the 194/.400 neighborhood, IIRC. What gear is in the car and are planning on changing it, too.

I will re-ring stock pistons. gear ratio is 2:56, after I'm done with this project I will be rebuilding rear end installing posi traction and probably go with 3:23 or 3:42 gear ratio
