1972 F85 Cutlass Engine Mount Change
1972 F85 Cutlass Engine Mount Change
Hi there,
I found the left engine rubber mount broken and recieved left and right engine mounts new. Question to installe the new ones is if anyone here did the change by slightly jacking the engine with wheels on ground alone or by first jacking the chassis, supporting the engine on the oil pan screws and lowering the chassis in order to remove the bolts of the mounts side after side. The service manuals dont give instrutions to change the mounts safely without removing the engine. Any help or step by step instruction around here somewhere. Many thanks.

Put the car on stands or ramps to give you some working room underneath. Remove the two long bolts and raise the block with a jack from underneath or use a cherry picker from the top. you only need to lift it a couple inches to get in there. easy swap out from there on.

I replaced the mounts on our '72 just as described above. Jack stands to support the chassis and a small jack with a large wood block under the pan. Just place the wood block so it pushes flatly against the pan and not on the drain plug. Do one side at a time to keep things lined up and it goes quickly.
Our mounts had worn so much that the fan was lightly hitting the shroud. the new mounts went in easily and there was a big difference in where the engine sat.

Hi, all worked exactly as described above. Except the left hand side was more difficult to remove because of the heat shield that is to be removed together with the mount. Also you are required to work best with two on it while one is giving a helping hand... Thanks for the tips guys, helped a lot.
