To change or not to change the rear end?

Hello everyone,

I've got my motor half way complete. However, I'm trying to figure out if I'll need to change my rear end. I've run the numbers and they are CCA 03031B1. Come to find out this is a Chevy 10 bolt 8.2 w/ 3.08.

The application I have is as follows:

SRP 206072:Pistons, Forged, Flat, 4.155 in. Bore, 1/16 in., 1/16 in., 3/16 in.
Comp Cams CL42-225-4:Camshaft, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 284/296, Lift .541/.544.

I've been advised that I can change the gears and keep the 10 bolt, and I've been told to upgrade to a 12 bolt. This will not be a race car. Street only!

So the question is "To change or not to change the rear end?" If so, please provide any recommendations.

For just a fun street driven car I think you'll be fine. If you decide you want something more read through some of the posts made by 507OLDS and Monzaz. They're both very knowledgeable about rear ends and the options you have. There's some good 10 bolt rear ends out there, so you don't need to spend the money for a Chebby 12 bolt. John

Remember when you put in a used unknown rear you will usually get what you pay for. A 40 year old rear at the very least deserves a re bearing to hold up to your NEW engine and do not forget about the trans too.

If you ever get some traction, or wheel hop, that 10 bolt will grenade. Sell it while it is worth something. also, the Chevy 10 bolt probably uses C clips to retain the axles. If you snap one, the wheel and tire come out and destroy the quarter panel or maybe cause you to wreck the car.
