Just acquired a 1967 Delta 88. Carb is a Quadrajet, block stamp is 389244D. However the number stamped on the front of the passenger side head is N681957 and even though I have the FSM I can’t reconcile this number. Any ideas?

Just look for the letter code on the corner of the head.

Its the engine unit number and the letter is the model line.
N is for Delta 88 I believe. See link to post below.

Found it - large B stamped on each head. So mine's a '66 motor in a 67 Delta 88.

1967 Delta with a big block used a 425 with C heads.

The "N" prefix on the engine unit number signifies a 1966 425 4bbl motor. At least the HEADS on your engine are from a 1966 model.

1966 was B heads while 1967 was C heads.

Interestingly the engine color is metallic blue - could this be a toro motor?

A Toro motor would have a "T" suffix on the engine unit number. The early Toro motors are pale blue, not the 455 metallic blue.

I’ve got a drill hole next to the fill pipe (see picture). Does this change anything?

Check here on the pass. side. These are 66 B heads for a 400 442.

That's SUPPOSED to be a threaded hole where the strut for the alternator bracket mounts (for non-A/C cars). If it's drilled out, someone f'd it up.

Thanks Joe - I'd misunderstood where the famous engine drill hole was located. On closer inspection this is a threaded hole (this is an AC car and the compressor and brackets were rolling around in the trunk :-) )
