Wheel/Tire size, again. Going for a certain look....

I know there's a buhzillion posts about this, but none seem to answer my question specifically. I have decided to mount 15" torque thrust wheels to my '70 CS and going for a blackwall and thicker tire appearance. I currently have 225 60 14s mounted to the 14" SSll wheels and the tires are not thick enough around the rim plus they are too short/small in circumference for the look in going for.

So for the new 15’s, I'm thinking 215/60 15 or 205/60 15 - but should I go for a 7" wide wheel or 6"?

My last car ('69 Corvair), I mounted 195/70 to a 14 x 6" wheel - the tires appeared too tall and not wide enough then either.

Im going to finally get it right, so any and all input, including pictures is greatly appreciated!

PM70, where on LI are you? Your car looks familiar.
Remember that the sidewall defines the relationship between height & width.
I.E. 225/60-14. Width is 225 mm. Sidewall height is 60% the width. last # is rim diameter. So is you go from a 225/60-14 to a 205/60-15 Your tire will be thinner with about the same overall height, too short for these cars IMO.
Tirerack is a good resource for comparing heights & widths of different size tires.

Yeah, I'm going in the wrong direction. Thought I had it right with the BFGs and not happy. Already seeing how this works, thanks. I'm in Brightwaters, near Bayshore, and planning on going to the May 7 event. You?

7" minimum width for certain. I have 245-60-15s all around and like them. I would never use something as small as 215 or 205 60s. 70s maybe, but not 60s.

442 KO... Nice Ride!

hopefully someone will post a picture with the size wheels/tires the OP is considering so he can compare the difference. Myself, I like big wide tires and wheels.

I also did the 235/60/15s on 15x7s on the front & 275/60/15s on 8" rims on the back. The car's sitting high in the back in the pics but I hadn't "tweaked the billet spacers yet, I trimmed them down 'til I got just a little rake towards the front. Just my opinion but I like the look of the 68'-69' with their big round wheel wells filled up.

Here is a few shots of the convertible I had. Maybe it helps since its close in color to your car. Both sets of rims were 15x7 & 15x8. Torq Thrusts had 215/70 & 255/60. SS1's had 225/70 & 275/60. 275's rubbed slightly on bumps but it had replaced quaretrs & I think the lip stuck out a little farther than stock. Not bad though. I didn't want the back jacked up. At stock height I liked the 255's more but that was JMO.
It was kind of weird at the time. I had the Torq Thrusts on it and got a good deal on the SS1's. I liked SS1's on everything except this car. I ended up going back to the Torq Thrusts but with the bigger tires from the SS1's, mounted blackwall out.

This is a good look! Steam Rollers bigs n littles...

On a serious note the 70-72s need to fill out the wheel wells. Taller is better IMO and Im not talkin about 20s with rubber bands for rubber I like sidewall on 70-72s. 245 and up on 15" Rims. Some of the 16" repro look alike billets aren't bad either.
