Very cool, I had an Econoline van like that, back in the beginning of my Hippie days... good memories! But I would love to have that Econoline pickup now!
There is a low-down fifth-wheel just below the rear bumper of the tractor. The trailer does not have landing gear, so when you drop the trailer you need a couple of large wooden blocks or similar to hold the trailer off the ground and level.

My Club Wagon is a couple years newer than those Econolines, and this is how I hauled it last fall.
Was that how a normal allotment of cars were delivered. I'm guessing with the variety of vehicles on there they were headed to a display somewhere not to a dealer lot or did they get shipped like that sometimes.

As depicted in the photo I posted, it appears those are new vehicles headed to a dealership...
I would say that this load is headed to more than one dealership, since Mercury wasn't usually sold by Ford dealers. The line up was Ford as a stand along dealership, and Lincoln Mercury dealerships. Difficult to know for certain 60+ years later.
I remember watching the Anchor Motor Freight trucks back in the 60's & early 70's delivering new cars in late August and early September as a kid, and then the dealers 'hiding' the cars until the grand sale day. I do not recall any of the manufacturers offering a flat bed pick-up truck as seen in the photo. Maybe it was picked up at a special services shop that installed the flat bed on a cab only order or removed the standard bed.
