Oh I know. But it still sucks that people think like that.
Another day at the dyno with the new heads on my 357ci mule. These are good right out of the box😎.

More testing today on the small block heads.
What if I were to tell you that 450hp+ on 91 pump gas would be very doable and streetable with a 350 and off the shelf pieces?

Not done yet but this head will be a bonafide game changer for even the average small block guy. Torque would be 425+ at the very least.

This is one of the things I’m interested in , bolt them on and go! The previous edelbrocks seem to need a bunch of work to make them better . I don’t mind spending the money on the heads but would rather not buy a set and then put a grand into them .one of the reasons I’ve stuck with the irons , maybe these will change my mind.

I'm far more interested in seeing how much a fully competition ported set can make on a 500+ CID 15:1 solid roller BB.

Don’t believe everything you hear. I’ve done a bunch of builds with out of the box Edelbrocks and made competitive power.
This new small block head will be a welcome addition, guaranteed.

If it gets proven that they can make more power than any of the three sets of fully ported aluminum heads I already have you can bet your lunch I will.

Mark, on the big block heads, you mentioned that there was more material above the port roof for raising the intake runners. Did they also go to a longer valve and add material to the spring seat area so the bowl can be made deeper?

Both heads have more material everywhere except where they scalloped the end. Valve length is the same as before but machining the seats a bit shouldn’t be a problem.

Mark

They look like very nice heads, I can wait till next year and then I am sure you will have excellent cam suggestions and they will be available at Summit.

Thats great, your making as much HP as my pump gas production GM headed 327 utilizing a flat tappet lifter with a whole .480 lift, dual plane intake, with a 5/64 ring pack nice work!

When they become available I will take a look at them, Ck the guides for clearance, and ck the runout on the seats along with valve run out and make a video. Hopefully they will be better than previous Edelbrock efforts.

I am curious how much timing the new chamber likes vs the last gen or iron heads. Ah the peanut gallery.

I'm a fan of the Engine Masters series. I love seeing some of the old horsepower myths put to pasture. The one on aluminum vs iron heads will show you that the only differences are weight and ease of machining. Timing vs octane? No difference other than detonation resistance (important for power adders). Ice bags on the intake between runs? Nope, but old school cool can for the fuel? Yes. Most recently, oil pumps: not much difference. The high-zoot billet pump killed a few hp, but it was doing 80psi. Loosen the clearances, and that comes back.
So, yeah these new small block heads are great, but the comparison will be against a 1st gen big block head modified to fit or worked irons, not exactly apples to apples.
Either way, they need to stop teasing with unrealistic ship dates that they know won't happen.

@fleming442 I agree that Engine Masters does a nice job of focusing on single variables when they test various changes to engines to assess performance differences, and you are correct that they showed that virtually identical iron heads and aluminum heads showed no real difference in HP, timing, etc. As you say, eventually we will have more definitive numbers on how these new heads perform versus stock iron heads, reworked iron heads and the Gen 1 aluminum heads. I look forward to the results when Mark or others have the time to perform these tests.

@VORTECPRO While your message may have been sarcastic, I think that you are highlighting the EXACT reason that these new small block heads are a big deal for us small block owners. It is nice to see Edelbrock making more performance parts for Oldsmobile engines, and it will be great to have access to bolt-on performance parts like the Chevy owners have, your 327 being a great example of what is possible with non-exotic, bolt-on parts.

As an owner of a 350 with #5 heads, my options are either to spend $2000+ on reworking my #5 heads for larger valves, new springs, porting and polishing, etc. or bolt on the new Edelbrock aluminum heads. Even if cost and performance were exactly equal, who wouldn't go with the lighter aluminum heads unless you are a stickler for originality?

New small blocks heads are great. In my eyes the big block head has 2.15/1.68 valves and reworked chamber. Are the real winner. For me the max ported big block heads on bored out 350D or DX block. With the right parts. Would be bullet proof animal.

Small block head has the same new chamber, just smaller valves and less cc.
And I’m a fan of the engine masters series as well, to a degree. Check out the build specs on their 351W mule. You’re going to make comparable power with these heads and a similar overall combination, no question.

Excellent question but, you need to re-read the question and think before you answer.

What did I miss? He asked about material thickness, I answered it. He asked about valve length, I answered it. Lastly he asked about spring seat thickness in particular, I answered it.

My point is: A 350 Olds with its big bore and short stroke combined with a big valve aftermarket head has some very serious potential in my opinion. Olds 350 power from my shop would get all over my production headed small cammed 327.

The bore is only .057 bigger than a 302/327/350 Chevy. Stroke is .100 shorter.
I agree it has serious potential, I’ve already said that. Since you haven’t figured it out though, the overall combination of my mule isn’t necessarily an optimum combination for a real good street build with this head, much less something destined for the track. Again I’m well aware of that, Edelbrock is too. We’re working with what we have right now but other plans are already in the works. Plus there are other areas we are focusing on that are way over your head. Most of you have no clue what goes into this. I didn’t either before now. It’s a process for sure.
Note; for the Engine Masters crowd, watch season 5 episode 10, 351W Intake shootout. You’ll be right there with this new head.

IMO a good number from a street 350 Olds with a aftermarket head should be right around 500 HP, maybe 480 HP with a flat tappet cam @ 6400 RPM, that should be very doable.

I personally think the mule has some nice parts in it, my bank account says so too. What are the specs on the Crane roller cam you are testing? Nothing wring with testing something that will have reasonable manners and still produces great power. Now these heads on a 425+ ci small block stroker should make block testing power on a regular gas 350.

They’re Crane LS lobes on an 8620IG Core. Spec is 222/228@.050, on a 110lsa with .555 lift on both.
Velcro- I’ve asked before, and I’ll ask again since it seems you still haven’t figured this out. This is an Olds site, not a Chevy site so please don’t clump us in with that community. While I believe 480 or so will be very doable in street trim, we don’t have the plethora of off the shelf heads available to us like you do. We’ll have ONE true off the shelf, bolt on piece for a small block Olds. Let me repeat that, ONE. You have heads with different valve angles, styles, manufacturers, material etc. available to you. We’ll have ONE.
