Found the recommended fuel pressure for various carbs on Summit. I will see where mine is at, cruising and WOT, see if it stays in the 6 to 7 psi range. I am also pulling out 2 degrees of timing from 40 to 38, see what that does. See if the popping is timing related.

I was going to pull out two degrees of timing. I put the timing light on it. It showed 6 degrees! It was 11 degrees retarded for where I swear I tightened it down. So advanced it to 15 at 1000 rpm. That put it 38 to 40 degrees at maybe 3000 rpm. Then I took it out with an 1/8 tank. I saw about 7 ish psi at start up, then mostly 5.5 to 6 psi bagging the hell out of it. I saw closer to 3 to 4 psi the very last run but I am pretty sure it is ready to run out of gas, E and beyond. You can see the drop in the pic, was 6 psi at idle, surprised it didn't completely run out of fuel. No regulator or fuel pump needed. Oh the popping up top went away, these new Edelbrock heads don't like 29 degrees WOT. No regulator required. This carb is pig rich idle, part throttle and WOT, look to my Olds 358 thread for its teardown and recalibration.
