Wanted: 3.23 gears for 49-'52 Olds Rear end (9.25" ring gear)
Wanted: 3.23 gears for 49-'52 Olds Rear end (9.25" ring gear)
I have a '49 Olds with a built 425 C.I. Olds engine and 700R transmission. The stock '49 rear end has 3.64 gears. I currently am turning 2378 RPM in overdrive at 75 MPH. I would like to have the added efficiency of 3.23 gears which would drop me to 2110 RPM at 75 MPH.
3.23 gears were standard in all 1949 model 88's except convertibles and station wagons. They had 43 tooth ring gears and 13 tooth pinion gears, thus 3.23 ratio.
Does anyone know if I kept the 40 tooth ring gear, could I install a 13 tooth pinion and get a 3.08? Would the gears mesh, etc.
