Tears ago Big Red did the same thing with an "O" type. The tech removed the axle and I took it to a machine shop that specialized in turning crankshafts. He welded up the worn part where the bearing "went", then turned it on his lathe to the correct size (as I recall). Then got a new bearing pressed in, and it worked fine. The only problem: machine shop owner said it would hold up very well, BUT (don't you just hate that), if you were drag racing it a lot, it would probably break. Sorry, I don't have an extra good one, and that was my problem, then.

My machinst had heard of that being done too but it is a pretty expensive thing to do, he says, he also mentioned the "iffy" part of the process too....so, still looking for a useable one....

side question? are all O type axles the same other than the heavy duty O type. i have several O type single track rear ends that i would be willing to part out.

It should be a 28 spline axle with that gear ratio and a sealed bearing ./ I have some spares . I am located on the Wisconsin - Illinois border and can ship it to you . Asking $50 plus UPS shipping . Let me know if that works for you . BOB .

Hi Bob, thanks......I am a bit concerned that I could possibly end up with another with a spun bearing. Mine was spun by only a few 1000'ths of an inch and it was not obvious until I had the bearing removed and the shaft measured. Does the one you are offering have the bearing on it? If not, could you measure the shaft where the bearing sits?
Thanks!!

67-69 Cutlass/442 had the same 28-spline shaft,with sealed bearing.
68-69 Vista Cruiser is different
70 Cutlass/442 is different
70 Vista is different

I found one that will work, but if someone else has one closer, great.I would never weld & turn one.Usually, the person doing that repair will talk you out of it.If you end up breaking the axle, you will now have to find a new 1/4 panel & do some bodywork, from the wheel coming off your car.

You need to have the bearing off to confirm that the surface is perfect. Those shafts were made of a softer material, and the shaft would actually shrink under the bearing, causing it to spin, and therefore turn the journal down even more.

Yea, I would not do the welding either, I guess they are also heat treated so that would need to be "re-done". I ordered one from opgi so I should be good as long as it fits.....

I removed the old bearing which popped when i pressed it off , it was on there very solid . The axle shaft measures with my dial caliper and it was 1.378 od where the bearing and lock ring sit . The bearing i have here is a BCA - RW 507 BR . It measures 1.377 ID and the lock ring measures 1.370 ID . I can clean the axle and bearing retainer plate and install the bearing for just the price of the bearing if you want . Let me know . Thanks BOB

I sell new ones by the pair, for about $280.00-$300.00 shipped. 1541 material. Far better than stock.

I had my 31 spline welded and it broke a couple years later (from a 1-2 shift) and bent my quarter panel
