1968 442 rear axel ratio
1968 442 rear axel ratio
Hello.
New member from Norway.
I am working on a 1968 442.The rear axel is stamped R2,no date code.I know this correspond to a 2,56:1 ratio, but was this axel ever an option on the 442 or has it been installed later?

I looked in a -68 salesman guide or whatever the called the book, and the way I understood it the 2,56:1 ratio was the standard axel on a 442 with the L65 option.
Other than this unavailable as an option on a 442.
Is this right or wrong?

Not sure jankyrre but other '68 guys will chime in. I will add that about a quarter century ago, I was second owner of an original-condition Saffron '68 442 with automatic for a short while and it had a 3.08 rear.

I think the 2.56 was standard on the 442 with Turnpike Cruiser option.
3.08 would be standard with the regular 442 & automatic trans.
You are correct Jankyrre

The air cleaner has OE silk screened on it and it is the same air cleaner as the 350 2 bbl.
