68 442 convertible looking for a 442 motor any ideas for other motors?
HI so i just picked up a 68 442 convertible now the motor is not the original ..
I'm looking for a 442 motor that will match the car itself i know it won't have matching numbers but having a 442 motor will help the value for the car in years to come... but i also seen some other motors/newer ones in 442's that would be my last resort
i post it some pics the last two shows the motor i think is a chevy 350? idk
thank you in advance !
UPDATE!! MY VIN IS 344678Z******
I POSTED I PIC ON ANOTHER FORUM ... EARLIER THIS MONTH TO CONFIRM THAT IT IS A 442... I ALSO SAW THE GRILL WHICH I ALREADY ORDER ONE AND THE EMBLEMS WERE INSTALLED LOWER THAN THE ORIGINAL SPOT ... WHY I DONT KNOW BUT I WILL GET ALL THE FIX ONCE I PAINT THE CAR ! THANK YOU GUYS

not to come across negative but you have a cutlass grill and what appears to be an olds 350.
are you sure you just don't have a cutlass, does the vin have 344 in it, if it doesn't you have a cutlass which would start out as 334

Also, those 442 emblems on the fenders look much lower then where they should be.
x2 on checking that VIN. If you get it, you can punch it into this VIN decoder to see what you got: http://www.oldsmobilecentral.com/vin-decoder.php
And this is just my opinion, but if you don't have the original motor to the car, I wouldn't worry about putting another correct 400 ci engine it. At this point I think your best bet at raising the value is putting a 455 in there.

344 in VIN, but what appears to be a Cutlass front end (grille, fenders w/ incorrectly placed "442", 350-2bbl.....w/ a dashpot instead of an idle stop solenoid, and a vaccum choke pulloff....not a factory carb for a '68 350...could be from another year). Does the rear bumper have the cutouts for the trumpets? I'd be looking for front end frame damage from a collision.

From what I have checked they put a cutlass grill and the emblems in the wrong place but from inside the fenders I can see where they did bodywork and cover the wholes in the middle of the fender so that tells me that those are the right fenders but they probably had the work done long time ago and the shop was not a high end shop
and somewhere in the 442's life got a new rear bumper but doesnt have the cut outs so thats another thing i have to replace
you mention:
dashpot instead of an idle stop solenoid, and a vaccum choke pulloff.. <---- is this a easy fix? thanks again
