ppg omni paint for code 28 twilight blue
Hello guys ,gals.
My 71 cutlass is almost ready for paint .The painter wants to "jamb it" and says the 1970 code 28 twilight blue metallic is only available in the "Omni"
line of paint from ppg. He says they only use waterbased paints nowadays.
It will be base / clear . Thoughts?

Any color can be made in any system. That does not mean that manufacturer has a formula for that code though. While the environ-mental regulations vary from state to state here I don't know if solvent-borne is legal in your area. That is code 28 on my avatar and I matched it to the trunk jamb above the taillight. You might find your local paint supply and go there. You can find out about the local laws and could look through their color library to get the closest color to original as possible. If there is not a formula for the code you are looking for you can go that route and may end up with a closer color anyway. Manufacturers don't typically archive formulas and what you may end up with is a color that is "close" but after spraying may be embarrassingly far off.

What brddg says is correct. It can be made in any paint line, either by a formula, camera or a crossover which probably will need some tinting adjustment to be perfect. Waterborne is national rule in Canada since 2010. That is the reason your painter will be using it. As far as match, probably will be much more brilliant in water as the aluminum flake is coated to prevent oxidation in water. Color will be much prettier than factory....

did you wet sand before clear coats?
he couldn't have been more right, the clear hid all the spots that were shoddy.

wet sand
Sorry ,I meant between the clear coats. My painter did this, and he says
becomes smoother(less orange peel) won't require buff and polish later???
We'll see. !!

Anyone who wears exactly ZERO PPE (personal protective equipment), would not touch my car....sorry... If he could give 2 sh$ts about his health, why would he care about his work......1970 was 4 and a half decades ago!

workplace safety
Yeah, I hear you on the workplace safety concerns .I have my WHIMS(WORKPLACE HAZARDOUS INFORMATION SYSTEM ) certificate, which we are obligated to have here in Canada , when we work with these environments and chemicals .
I was actually the one who took the pics, and had just block sanded the panels on my car(to save $$$), with a mask on of course!!.
If it matters it was a nice breezy summer day and the shop (big door was opened) when he was priming those panels.

body/paint
I am mechanically inclined , not so much in auto body, .Was on holiday last week of august, needs to find fender for r side.Got one (Brian Trick).
Decided to go down to the body shop to bolt it up and the frt end.
Got that done, and asked if there was anything I can do to help..They gave me a block sander and sandpaper and had me go at it.3 days of that!!!
I really have an appreciation for the auto body trade now. HARD WORK

Car looks nice paint is 90% prep 10% application unless it is a bend repair or custom work.

clear coats
3 coats of clear over a weekend.buffed inbetween coats.Honestly,i don't think i have to buff and cut. It's pretty nice, couple dirt freckles here and there.Carlos started painting cars at the ripe old age of 17 at a Renault factory in Europe. He's now 56.Cost me a bit for paintjob ,but then again everything seems expensive these days.
Tony ,pass by again any time and see it,bring your 72 this time.
