There was an old thread I started many moons ago about DuPont dropping a couple of their ingredients for the H/O gold color. I'm guessing if it was available still, they could do it, but once they ran out it wouldn't be replaced? I haven't heard any more on this.
But in that thread I mistakenly listed "PPG" 5090 instead of the correct BASF 5090 color. Turns out PPG has a 5090 of its own which is called Spanish Olive, which is a dark brownish green color.
The BASF 5090 is called Hurst Gold Met" in their formulation line. I have a Diamont color formulation for that which is almost a dead ringer for the DuPont H/O gold. Or maybe the other way around, since I didn't know at the time, that BASF already had 5090 on the shelf when Demmer and DuPont gave me their information. It was 1995 when they got their formulation figured out. It wasn't until 1999 until DuPont got theirs. I actually got to see the 5090 on a car in 99 just north of Tampa, FL after DuPont came out with their version and had a test plate with me of the DuPont stuff and compared it to the BASF stripe on his trunk. Can't recall who it was now, but they had a 69 redone with the BASF paint. It looked great. I went and got a can of it mixed up and it's dang near a match to the DuPont gold.
Again, to note, BASF 5090 is the formulation number to use for their 69 H/O gold paint if that's the paint you want to use.
To note, the headrests are a different shade of gold. Or if they weren't originally, they ended up that way. Nearly every headrest out of an original 69 H/O I've ever seen has weathered and turned darker to some degree. My very early originals had white painted underneath, but not past the edge of the gold like in the pre-production pics. Kind of like a base for the black because they painted it so thin. But the gold didn't hold up very well regardless. Still turned dark. There was some decent looking gold up under the plastic cover, though. Jeff Stanish used a small clipping of that in the developing of his headrest gold paint he had made up.
But it's so convoluted with all these paint companies and labels nowadays. R-M has Diamont, but apparently is and has been a part of BASF family. I can't keep it straight any more. And somehow I think PPG has their fingers in BASF now too. Whatever.
As always, test spray out any paint you get mixed and make any adjustments to formulations for an exact match.
But don't just take my word for it. Here's a pint formulation for the Diamont base coat straight from the BASF color chart website. Price code "B". Their name for it is "Hurst Gold Met" for years 1969-1969.
I'm wanting to redo my headrests, do you know the correct color for them or know of any writeups on doing so. I've searched here with no luck.
Thanks,
Adam
Jeff Stanish was working on the headrest gold for a good while and I helped him out where I could. They are a slightly different gold than the stripes. My own car didn't have the white pinstripes like the prototypes/promo cars, but it did have the white undercoat under the gold.
Haven't talked to him in a while to know exactly where he got with the paint. He did send me a sample can of the custom formula spray from Tower Paint, Oshkosh, WI showing CODE: "Interior Gold V", YEAR: "1969", COLOR: "Hurst Olds Gold Vinyl" but I've never got around to using it and I don't know whether he sent the can before he scoped out a 19K mile original car (he said it was a tad brighter) or after, so I'm not sure if he sent me a can of his latest/greatest

Thank you, 69HO43! I shot Jeff an email this evening.
Well, I just got a reply saying "Sorry, we were unable to deliver your message to the following address."...
Well, that sucks. I haven't talked to him in quite a while, so it's very possible his email addy has changed. I hope nothing has happened to him. I don't think so...
He's on facebook. There's only 3 jeff stanish people there. His current FB photo is a pic of him getting a Boy Scouts of America award or something like that. He's got Oldsmobile junk on his facebook page. You'll find the right one.
