I inherited my dad's 79 after he passed a few days ago, and I have some questions

I'm william, new here, unfortunately three days ago

my dad passed and when he did he left me his 79 Cutlass supreme the 350 small block out of a 79 Chevy, I put the motor in with him at 8 years old I'm just been my childhood car sense, one thing my dad always wanted to do was change it to a tilt column without the shifter on the column , it currently is a solid column shift, but I'm installing a hurstpromatic 2 ratchet shifter on the floor and would like to put tilt in, what is the length of the steering columns on these things so I can find one

Welcome, sorry for your loss.

I suggest finding an OE tilt column from a parts car, instead of finding any tilt column and modifying it to fit the car. Post pics when you can.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. I lost my Mom this year too. I hope his life was long and mostly happy.

Not sure if this will help, as you begin the hunt for a tilt column, begin with 79 Cutlasses, then figure out whether any prior or later years swap in directly.

If that fails, the look over to the other GM brands for something that will fit.

I can’t recall if 1979 Cutlasses were “A” bodies or “G” bodies. If it’s a square car, it’s probably a “G” body and that’s a popular restoration / resto-mod platform which means there’s generally good parts support for those types of cars.

Enjoy the hobby and go at your own pace. Be aware some months you’ll get a lot done and some months (or years) you won’t, but try to drive it regularly to keep the seals fresh and remind yourself of why you keep it.

You would do well to find a tilt column out of a 79 Cutlass, they should be still around.
