oil filter for 47 olds 238 inline 6

Hey guys, Green horn here. I own a 47 olds dynamic 76 all original. including the inline 6. I would love to change the oil filter but not sure what the part number is. I do know it has to be that big a&& canister under the hood.
any help would be great
Thanks in advanced.

Hi Eddie, welcome to our site. I think the big cannister you are referring to is the air cleaner housing, if it's the one on the top. I can't remember for sure but the six I took out of my car is still in the garage and I will look at it tonight and see if I can get you any info. So your car is all original and running then? Cool.

Thanks for the reply. I relize the canister on the carb is the air filter the large canister I was refering to is on the fire wall and the oil lines run to it. As soon as I can get some pictures of the cannister I will. Here are some pictures of the car. If I did it right
Thanks again

I didn't know the cars in the 40s had oil filters. I thought they used the oil bath type air cleaners.

Then again, I always heard old timers say that they used a roll of toilet paper in the canister style oil filters. If the canister mounted to the fire wall is the oil filter then I would say just take the canister off and see what kind of filter is in it. You should be able to match it to an oil filter at the parts store that will at least be the same diameter. As long as it isn't too long it should work.

You can also check out Fusicks.

You could try calling this guy. He has a pretty nice 47 Olds.
If they're nice enough to post their # on the net, they're probably nice enough to give you 5 minutes of their time.

If you're not comfortable bothering a perfect stranger with an Olds question, you can always be shady and pretend you are interested in the car.
"Well, if I purchase this car...... how would I obtain filters when changing the oil?"
Haha.

Here's a picture of the cannisters.

After you get the filter out, use a "turkey baster", or equivalent, to remove the oil from the canister.

Use a little cup grease on the new seal, before you install it in the lid.

Well Its done. I removed & replaced the oil filter. biggest filter I have ever seen. To top it off, had to use 14 quarts of oil. I won't be changing oil for a while. And thanks again for the info..

'47 six cylinder should take 5 quarts for the sump, plus about 1 for the filter.

Thats what I thought. But since its an after market oil canister it held more oil. the oil filter was napa part# 1554 approx: 10"H 7" round maybe the majority of the oil is in the filter & the lines?? Hell all I know that its reading tad bit under full on the dipstick.

So, you have an after market one? Is it remote from the block then? Since you mentioned lines it sounds like it. I think Norm was referring to stock and the part number he provided was stock.

btw, I like that visor, wish I could find one.
