1973 Cutlass Supreme ignition stuck, after swapping shifter..

One day could not turn off vehicle, slammed into park -broke shifter too.Had to pull coil to stop running.Switched out ignition and now shifter. While doing so I moved shifter by turning key so center counsel can go back in.put all back now my key wont come out ,steering wheel moves, brakes feel stiff...any suggestions? Linkage? Slight adjust? Did I miss something?

Your backdrive linkage is out of adjustment.

That was probably your original problem, too.

Page 7A-45, 1973 Chassis Service Manual.

Welcome to ClassicOlds.

Here is the diagram. They do not specifically mention the backdrive linkage, so you'll have to play with that adjustment yourself.

Is the backdrive linkage (the rod from the trans to the steering column) even in place?

The steering column is designed to that the key cannot be turned to the LOCK position unless the shifter is in PARK, for obvious reasons (like, you can't turn off the key and lock the steering column while driving).

If the rod is missing or out of adjustment, this collar in the steering column won't align properly and thus you won't be able to turn the key to the LOCK position. Usually you can simply grab the collar on the steering column and turn it fully counterclockwise to the LOCK position, then turn the key.

Forcing parts is a good way to break them and thus lighten your wallet.

Welcome to the site... In addition to Eric's info, if you use Fig. 7A-48 shown below, you should be able to adjust the shift rod to remove the key... Also, should you desire to own a 73 Chassis Service Manual, I have a couple available for sale...

Glad to hear your problem has been solved... Now, about that chassis manual you may need in the future...
