Like lost puppies they just follow me home...Non Olds

Well I am pretty much broke after buildng my building and I need get a saving account again. I have come together with a guy that has money and trusts my judgement 100% so I can spend his money and I do all the work on anying I buy.

I picked this up today. Its a 66 Caprice that has been in storage 17 years. Its one of the hardest loaded Chevys I have ever seen. Matching number 396, buckets,12 bolt, power windows, power seat, tilt, console, some kind of 4 **** speaker adjustment on the console that I have never ever seen before and more. Someone must have ordered it and just hit every check mark you could on the order sheet.

I'm going to clean it up and document the car. If the motor will turn over my fingers are crossed I might be able to make it run.

I've always liked the '66 Caprice, as soon as I saw what you had, I looked for the larger crossed flags on the fender, indicating a big block before reading the text.

Richard,

If you built it twice as big you would still fill it up. Its the nature of things. You'll be plenty busy with the twins let alone fixing up the cars. Good luck

Richard: Even though it's not an Olds, can't wait to see what you do to it. I'm sure the new financial backer you have hooked up with has seen and appreciates the outstanding quality of your work. Congratulations!

Good Luck with it!! I've done a couple '66,'67 + '68 Chev big cars, myself, also owned a few, back in the day.
Here's hoping it doesn't have Comfratron Air - no parts available!!

I would have passed on it if it was not a 396. The fact that the VIN is stamped on the block makes it that much better. I just it was not parked because it spun a main or something nasty. It does have oil and anifreeze so that a good sign.

My parents had a 66 Impala 4 door when I was a kid. I think it had a 283, but IDK. It was light blue on light blue.

If I had the money, that would be one of my projects, except I'd drop a 454 or 502 crate motor in

Probably the nastiest car I have ever cleaned out. I think 1/2 rats in Oklahoma used it as a urinal. I vacuumed up at least 20 lbs of rat turds. The trunk floor is gone because of all the rat ****

Small sample there was 10x as much in the trunk

Well no turning back now. I popped the new shops cherry today. I got a little oil , antifreeze and trans fluid on the floor. It felt good to have wrench in my hand after 6 months. One hage difference I noticed in the new shop was the light. I never had a drop light out once. The white walls really project the light under the car.

What I have feared was true. I could not rotate the motor so I pulled the plugs. 2 were rusty and crusty. I had to pull the motor and trans out together since it was locked up once out I was able to slide the trans off the converter. The top bolt for the converter was in the worst place it could be and was a real pain to get loose but I finally got it.

Once I got the heads off I could see why the two plugs wear crusty. Some water was sitting in those holes. I've got it soaking to pb blaster to see if I can break it loose. The good news is it's still std bore.

I managed to sneek outside between diaper changes for a while this afternoon. Project creep is setting in. The motor is a mess. Water or mouse **** was sitting in the motor for a long time. My hope for a simple re-ring of the bottom end is going to be a complete rebuild of the top and bottom. Even after soaking a week one of the pistons was so stuck I broke it getting it out. At least 4 of the intake valves have to be replaced. One had only about 75% of the stem left One of the valve covers was rusted through from the outside from mouse ****. I have never seen so much rodent damage in one car.

Well I should drop it off at the machine shop this week. Now I get to see what trouble I can get myself in with the chassis sitting there waiting on the motor.

Well things have been very very slow. The twins and a 5 yo really slow things down. On top of that my AADD (Automotive ADD ) is going strong.
I dropped the 396 off at the machine shop and started pricing stuff out to rebuild it. Even a basic rebuild was adding up pretty quick so I started looking around for a running motor I could drop in. That led to this following my home week later for $1000.00 I was a rough but running and driving truck with factory 454.
78454truck002.jpg?t=1311908079

That led me to the 67-72 truck site to help sell off the parts to try to pay for the motor. Well I have now sold about $1200.00 in parts and still have the 454 so other than the time it worked out well.

P__AB301-2.jpg?t=1316401733

In the mean time all the time I spent on the truck board re-kindled an old flame deep down. I have alway loved Squarebody trucks but have not owned one in years. I ran across this and it ended up on my trailer in Oklahoma one weekend.

subowned.jpg?t=1313888092

Its been hit on the driver front but its has rear nice interior. Its going to get a simple altitude adjustment down to few inches from the earth and some big in little ralley wheels that also ended up in the bed of my truck last weekend.

P__AFE21-1.jpg?t=1316401781

Of coarse I needed the RH front fender and some other parts. Since I did so well parting out the last one this is now sitting behind the shop.

783qtrton007.jpg?t=1319248746

As you can see I have a few irons in the fire now.

Nice to know I am not the only one suffering from AADD. I think we need to start a support group. First we need a hanger size building with about 100 acres of land in a state the doesn't mind a few hundred cars stored in and around the building.......................................Ric hard can run the meeting and we can all confess to our problems then let the fun begin
