New owner of a 65 98 LS for my 11 year old

Hi everyone. We are new to the 98 owner world but I have been around Oldsmobile's my entire life. My dad ordered from the factory a 1970 Cutlass Supreme SX with the W-32 option. We just finished restoring it a couple years ago. It is a amazing car and in our possession forever. Recently my 11 year old son who's a motorhead showed interest in a friends yard find, been sitting since 1980. They worked out a payment deal and he is the proud owner of a 1965 98 Luxury Sedan. It is a very complete car including window sticker, sales invoice and Protecto Plate but missing the title for some weird reason. I will post better pictures when I get a few good ones. What my initial questions are.

1.There is a second dimmer switch on the floor closer to the brake pedal and the normal dimmer switch over by the kick panel. What is the one for by the brake pedal?
2. I need a back bumper for it. is there any chance a 66 98 bumper would fit, they appear close but a bit different? I have access to a complete 66 98, 4 door hardtop is why I am asking.
3. Need one hubcap like in the picture. Anyone have an extra?

Thanks, Joel and Adam B!

I hate to be the voice of reason... Before you do any work, or spend any money on the car, you need to investigate the registration laws in your state to see if it is possible to get a title for the car. If you can not get a title, it is really only a parts car. Only once you have a title in your name should you actually invest any time or money in it. To answer one of your questions; The second "dimmer" switch is most likely a signal seeking radio station switch, but could also be a switch for an autotronic-eye headlight system. If it is a radio button, it works as an additional input for the wonder bar function. If it is working (very big if), when you press it, the radio will automatically go to the next strong station being picked up (early version of the "seek" button on a modern radio). If it is for an autotronic-eye there should be a sensor mounted on the dash that will automatically change the headlights from high beams to low beams based on the lighting conditions at night and on-coming traffic.

Thanks Tom. Good point and no we will not spend any more money until I know I can get a title. The owner says he still thinks he has it. He only has 50-75 cars to go through his tittle binders!
If not we have a local person I know that will help me obtain one in CO.
Great information on the second dimmer switch. Very cool and Thanks.

Welcome.

Try at these specialty salvage yards for bumpers or other parts you might need.

That's weird, I couldn't see the pics when I first posted but now they show up fine. Definitely a cool Oldsmobile.

Thanks everyone, I knew you guys would all be amazing and help with these questions. Thanks for the links to the salvage yards as well.
The window sticker and sales invoice call out deluxe wheel discs and wonderbar. The radio and everything is still in the car just for looks!
Wish me luck on the title and will be in touch! Here are a couple pictures of my dads, 70 SX W32.

Hi all. Update on the title. It will be a free and clear title in my sons and my name. I went to the DMV on Wednesday and all paperwork has been done and title will be sent in 3-4 weeks!
Also, My son actually found the missing hubcap randomly at the guys yard we got the car from. Apparently he had put a 15" wheel on it to move the car and of course the 14" Deluxe hubcap wouldn't fit. We were walking around and there it was sitting on top of a pile of hubcaps, how lucky are we.
Lastly, the 2 junkyards, Desert Valley and CT Autoranch neither have a bumper for a 65 98. Please keep me in mind when ya'll are searching.
Now we can start tinkering.
Happy spring!

Good to hear that you found the wheel cover and were able to get a title.

Try http://www.llclassicauto.com/Index.html in Idaho for the bumper. If they do not have it, report back and we will make more suggestions.

Can positively confirm that a ‘66 98 bumper will be wrong for a ‘65 98. They’re different in small ways, but different nonetheless. Just to put it in writing, the real tail lights, bezels and associated bright parts are all different between those 2 years.

In those days Olds changed the trim parts most years just to have a new offering. That’s what you’re dealing with now.

I can also suggest you check French Lake Auto Parts in Minnesota for the parts you’re looking for. They just might have good parts, but will almost certainly have cores. Also check Turner’s Auto Salvage in California. Larry Camuso is a good source too. Trustworthy.

Cheers
Chris
