You read it correctly. A woman rear-ended me in my 96 98. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. The damage is minor but I did dial OK Highway Patrol. Here's some pics:
Hopefully the plastic bumper can be reformed and the cornering lamps that are located inside the bumper can be reinstalled. None of the lenses are damaged. Undoubtedly, insurance would just pay out next to nothing since my car is so old.
If you look at the pic of her car you can see one of the screws that was securing my license plate got lodged in the plastic of her front bumper.
Interestingly, she told me before the patrolman arrived that she didn't have insurance. However, the paperwork the patrolman gave me lists an insurance company. It's probably a fly by night outfit.
I did give my insurer; State Farm, a call but they weren't very helpful or sympathetic. They just told me to contact her insurance since she rear ended me.
Jesse,
Be careful, there are lots of people driving around out there who will hit others and fraudulently claim against you for damages to their car and/or person. Hopefully the OK trooper report states she was the offending vehicle/driver and she was charged.
I had a guy hit me in my 99 Tahoe a few months ago. Bent the back bumper and pushed it just barely into the body at one corner. The other guys insurance paid me $1500 to fix it. I bought the parts from the Chevy dealer and had a friend with a body shop do the very minor body work. Made out pretty good actually. My insurance said they would handle it if I wanted but said to go with his insurance first.
The gal made a fraudulent statement to the police officer. She gave him her gap insurance information. She doesn't carry collision or liability. I'm going to have to wait until the official collision report is released in a week or so and dispute the insurance information she gave.
The state of OK allows you to report a collision with an uninsured driver. Unfortunately, it's quite burdensome and I have to get a repair estimate first (I have one scheduled on 8/17). Maybe I should stop paying for any insurance since this gal has got it all on easy street!
Since I only carry liability I am sort of up sh!+ creek. I did search online inventory of local salvage yards and found a good rear bumper in the same color. I guess I have to go get it this weekend.
I still don't get how you guys can drive around without any insurance down there, insane. Good luck on the repairs, hopefully as good as new.
Bet you don't have any idea how many Canadians drive around without insurance. They buy it for licensing, then drop it afterwards to save some bucks based on "I haven't been in an accident in my life". Then when it happens, Up $hit creek without a paddle. That's why I carry $2 million collision/comp/glass etc - the whole $hiteroo. Chances are I'll never need it, but when I do I'm covered and it doesn't cost me an arm and leg.

I get your reasoning. If you ever wrote the car off in a collision your company would be required to foot the bill to fix the other party's car but not yours. BTW, I have a box of parts that fits only 95/96 Ninety Eight Regency Elite if you run into any problems. And those little clips that hold the side SS trim? I have an entire bag of them NOS. If you ever need them LMK and they're yours for the cost of shipping.
The rear bumper has a self adhesive chrome insert. That's not hard to find at most body shop supplies. Cut to length, it fits under the metal connector on the side. I wish you the best on this Jesse.

Wow Allan, that's a bit of overkill. The very max I would carry is $250/500 as most court awards are usually limited to your amount of coverage, although there are exceptions in cases extreme carelessness.

Not really. The minimum here is 1 million PL/PD. Rules are different in Canada and as you likely know parts/labor etc cost almost double, sometimes more here. Besides it's not a huge cost for insurance like I have for a year. My son has the same coverage on his car and pays less than 1/2 of what most drivers do because he has an excellent record plus drivers ed. It's all perspective Eric. I'm not trying to compare US to Canada, that would be too hard because of the way insurance is structured in each different state.
Here's an update. I requested an Official Oklahoma Collision Report on 10/2. I received the request back because the officer had never filed the collision report. I called the OK Highway Patrol headquarters and left a message for the officer to call me back on Oct. 7h, 12th, 14th and 21st. I never received a return call. Yesterday (11/18) I sent a certified letter to the head of the OK Highway Patrol, Col. Pat Mays. We'll see if he or his staff contact me.
Nightmarish. On occasion, I rant about our socialistic car insurance system in BC but that would never happen here. At least we can get our cars fixed whether the cops do their paperwork or not.
Bet of luck in what sound like a long battle ahead.
