I'm going to look at a 64 98 today with my son. The motor is out but the tranny is apparently still in it. I would guess this car would have originally had a 394/slim jim combo (really just a guess).

It is being sold with an Olds 350 motor.

My questions:

Will a 350 bolt up to the older tranny?

Would a turbo 350/400 mated to the 350 be close to a bolt in swap for this car?

Any unique issues to these possible combinations?

OR..... anyone near NW Ohio have a 394 for sale?

Too late! We bought it....

The price seemed a little salty, but as we talked the owner realized we were going to fix it up and not take it to the demo derby. He said his price was high to smoke those guys out. He gave us a real fair deal!

Check out the interior. Last plated in 1971....

 

Congratulations on your new project, and welcome to the site! I don't know much about the 1964 full sized but agree it should have had a 394 from the factory. When you have time use the search feature on this site to find other threads about your vintage of car and possibly some about changing over to a newer drivetrain. John

I haven't seen the motor yet (the guy wasn't actually at the house) but not too concerned. Sounds like there's a rod through the side of the block. He says it's the original motor, though... but it says Rocket 350 on the air cleaner... I'm a-guessing the air cleaner got replaced along the way...

It will probably be a lot less costly to come up with a decent 394 that can be rebuilt verses attempting to dropping in a 350 along with a T350 or T400 transmission. I suspect you could run into serious transmission tunnel and drive shaft tunnel issues real quick, not to mention a variety of throttle and transmission linkage mods and having to alter the drive shaft length.

Aside from that, anyone who has a high compression or Ultra high compression 394 can attest to the fact the 394 is one heck of a potent engine. It is one of my all time favorite engines for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is lots of torque and fantastic acceleration.

Cool project. Make sure you go through that transmission if you plan to keep it. With all the rust on the pump housing there might be some debris or sludge in the transmission itself. Good luck.

 

Nope

Nope. The 394 uses a front motor mount and side mounts on the bellhousing. The later motors and transmissions use side motor mounts and a single rear trans mount. You'll need to fabricate custom mounts. There is a thread on this site, it's been done before.

 

Thanks, everyone. Definitely leaning towards the original 394. The rest of the car is too original to hack on too much.

It has power windows, steering and brakes, power front seat. Original AM radio and non-a/c...

Going with a roll-off to bring it home tonight...

Oh, and Olds64.. the tranny will be coming out for an inspection/cleaning. Looking at a motor/tranny combo to slip right in too... Thanks...

Home safe and sound. Motor is a 394. Block not broken, oil pan is cracked. Found radiator, hubcaps carb, aircleaner, generator, etc., etc. in trunk. Smokin' deal!

 

Cool! You can probably have the oil pan welded by a good welder.
