tranny fitting leak

hello,

i just now found the section devoted to 98s. I already posted this question in the transmission section but i'll post it here to with a pic of my '76.
I just noticed a leak from a fitting on the driver's side of the tranny. It has a small hose running out of it towards the engine. I wanted to know what this fitting is and what the leak might be.

Also, does anyone know the approximate cost of replacing the rear main seal? I just replaced the valve cover gaskets but i am still getting a drop or two from the rear of the engine. Replacing it myself is way out of my league.

It took me a while to figure out that the "hose" you refer to is actually the speedometer cable. Follow it to the other end and you'll find it actually passes through the firewall (unless you have cruise control, in which case it will run to a transducer on the inner fender panel). There are two O-ring seals here, one between the housing and the trans case and one internal to the housing that seals the speedo drive gear. Both are easy to replace.

thanks Joe. That's what it was all right. The o-rings had split.
