1964 Olds 98 Turn signal

My stalk was floppy but was working.

The click was solid left and right but going right the cancel would happen at the start of the turn.

Now I cannot turn left since it has slipped inside I guess so there is no room for the stalk to move down.

I am hoping it is just loose and needs to be tightened some. I am going into the switch soon.

If not any source for these switches I can see no where to find one.

Dorman makes repair kits for the turn signal cam. You should be able to get it at your local auto parts store. Just match the old one to the new one:

Tilt wheel or not? The mechanism is different. Don't expect to find parts this old at an auto parts store.

I wasn't sure if Dorman would cover this part. Recently, I was able to get the innards for the steering column in my 71 98. I guess 7 years makes a difference.

Turn signal parts for the 1969-up steering columns are very common and readily available (especially since they are common with Chevelle and Camaro). The 1968-earlier columns used different turn signal switches from year-to-year. On the early 1960s cars, the switches were sometimes mounted down on the column and activated by a cable. You'll NEVER find those from Dorman.

Apparently Fusick has some parts, but nothing listed for a 64 98.

This vendor is probably your best bet.

I am going to take the steering wheel off soon. The switch is on the column I guess what is in the steering wheel is the cam and yoke? I am hoping at minimum it is loose but I do have an expensive NOS yoke just in case. They are made of a pot metal and I guess prone to break.

Correct. The switch is on top of the column, about half way down. Under steering wheel is the lever plate. This plate pivots on the die cast upper bearing holder and accepts the turn signal lever. A rod passes down from the lever plate to the switch to actuate it. There are several springs between the lever plate and upper bearing holder. You really should review the drawing in the 1964 Chassis Service Manual, Vol. 3.

The turn signal in my 64 D88 was floppy as well. Turns out the cam was broken. By luck my 75 yo mechanic had a GM factory replacement in original packaging. $11 later, no floppy. He had two such cams. PM me for his contact information. He may just sell it directly to you.

Post a "wanted ad" for whatever you decide you need on this forum in the classified section. So far, I have been able to get most of my needed parts through here.

message me if interested, i'll pass along the name of the guy on here that helps me out of most of the jams I find myself in (old Olds related of course!)

Ok guys, I have a mechanic (an older guy almost 70 with 45 years+ experience) remove the steering wheel. The stalk was threaded badly into the pot metal yoke. Nothing was broken so he removed it. Took the stalk up to a auto machine shop nearby. They recut the threads on the stalk with the correct size threads and then he tapped the pot metal the same. Put it back in with some blue loctite and perfect. No play at all tight as new and cancels correctly. He cleaned the horn contact too and all works now. Only the clock does not work and the noise bump in rear that happens intermittently as mentioned in the other thread.

Do you have that contact info. My turn signals aren't working on my 64 Dynamic 88. Hopefully he still has the part
