Doesn't matter, so long as the viscosity is roughly correct.

If I recall, most oil-bath air cleaners want 30 weight oil (it should say on the label or in the owner's manual), so anything around 10W30 should be fine.

Just buy the cheapest one you can find.

I hate those old oil bath air cleaners. I put a dry element in my 54. Nobody can see it and it is a lot cleaner. It was a Wix filter #42088.

I don't think it would matter. I changed mine and had some 30W non detergent on the shelf, and it was fine. Larry

I don't have the shop manual for the 1953. The 1955 shop manual says that there were two air cleaners, a "standard" and a "heavy duty (oil bath)". In my life, I only remember seeing the oil bath. It's service calls for clean & replenish with 1 pint of SAE 40 oil. The standard cleaner calls for clean & re-oil with engine oil.
Since the oil in the oil bath cleaner is there to "catch" the crud when it attempts to make a U-turn, probably the oil is not as crucial as its level is. I usually use SAE 30 or 40 non-detergent, but almost any oil should work.

I use SAE30 in mine. As MDchanic noted, get the cheapest you can find.

If mine (and I have one) I would change it over to a dry paper filter like what I and Redoldsman did and not worry about it for 8000 miles. It is a easy conversion and not visable unless you take off the air cleaner top..... Tedd
