my parents always could keep their 88's in their garage when I was a kid... (with no problem).. but strangely today my mom has enough junk in there today you couldn't get a compact in it...

So you could get a 225" Electra 225 or a 225 " Electra Limited.

I've also heard that the Buicks were longer than the other GM cars by a few inches in the mid 70s.

There were two (2) series for 1960 and 1961 - the Electra and electra 225... the electra 225 was 225" long, but in 1962 all "Electra's" became 225's... The "Limited" name was originally used in 1958 replacing the Buick roadmaster as a full-line series... The Electra was offered from '62 to '66 in two models - base and "Custom"... In '67 GM offered a new interior trim package on the electra known as the "Limited"... In 1974, GM offered the "Limited" as a full line model - the Electra Limited along side the Electra 225. the new Electra Limited was offered with a new trim package known as the Park Avenue in late 74/early 75... that was similar to the Fleetwood talisman.

yeah the 40/40 seats were designed to mimic the Talisman edition of the fleetwood brougham... only a 4-passenger sedan... Who would buy a car that size for only 4 people?? haha... The 98 never offered anything like that...

Talking

Since we're on the subject od Deuce and a quarters.

When I was in high school I over corrected my mom's on a wet road one day and whipped bass ackwards thur the most beautifully manicured lawn in the neighborhood.

It looked like someone had taken a Cat D-9 across this fella's lawn and the Electra's Bumper had about 200 lbs of dirt / sod coming out of it.

Dear ole Dad was not pleased.

That's when I learned "Green side up" when installing sod.

I loved that car. First factory 8 track I ever saw. The other stories I will leave to your high school imagination.

I was wondering. Were these car referred to as a Buick Electra two-two-five, or were they referred to as the Buick Electra Deuce and a quarter? I've always heard the later.

actually only the 74 Talisman was a true 4 passenger with front and rear consoles, the rear being a 1 year only. 75 and 76 Talismans and all Park Avenues with the console were 5 passenger - I don't think Park Avenues ever had a rear console

speaking of cleaning up neighborhood yards in land yachts... our neighbor had an old 64 or 65 electra 225, and the guy stayed drunk half the time... He was on his way home one day, a little tipsy and cleaned out some farmers tobacco patch... that poor Buick never looked the same... I found the rear fender skirt, the exhaust system, the gas tank and a hubcap in some brush in a field behind that house a couple years ago (the old guy has been dead now for probably 15 years), and I saved the hubcap and skirt.... the rest is still laying there covered in tree branches where only I can find it...

OK, my '65 Jetstar may not quality as a land yacht, but some years back, I staged a photo shoot with it and my wife's MINI convertible. I did take unfair advantage of parallax error in the second photo, but as you can see, the cars' front ends were lined up perfectly.

You're welcome - that Jetstar I was just a 2-year run... I don't think I've seen any in car shows even '64 models... You definately have a "collector" on your hands there...

If you look real close, there is a " 98 " emblem on the back corner of the last PIC ( the white one that looks very much like a boat ) lol

The record holder for modern era (some 30s classics may have been longer) LandYacht was the 75-76 Cadillac Model 75 clocking in at a whopping 253" inches overall and 151.5 wheelbase! This was a factory built standard production car available at any Cad dealer.

Next was the Fleetwood Brougham, including Talisman edition which was just an ultra- fancy trim package, coming in at 234" LOA. The '75/76 Buick 225 and Olds 98 tied at (233.4") were close, and amazingly, the big Linc was just fourth at 232.9 (it just looked longer due to the straight lined sides), and the '75, and last, Imp was fifth at 231.1. Standard Cad DeVilles were 231.0

The 2 dr versions of these cars that had them were just as long and wide as any 4 dr, and fully qualify as Land Yachts, by any definition one might wish to choose. They look longer and cooler too, by virtue of the mile long doors... former 1947 Fleetwood 60-S owner and Cad-LaSalle club member.

My 64 88 takes up two spaces in every gas station. I get the looks from everyone...as if I were pulling a trailor. Always like to piff off the Prius owners! My father had the two door 98 convertible in 68,69,71,72. For the family (we had 9 in my family) we always had the Vista. It was know as "the beach wagon" and we always fought for the rear seat. My uncle had to extend his garage to fit his 98. You had to have a boat (and always an olds) in my next of the woods.
Big fast style and class thats the land yacht and that can only be the 88/98

Those circles I believe you are referring to called them deuce and a quarters, nine-eights and hogs (Cadillacs). They were all relegated to the Super Fly Pimpmobile class in the 70's after the Arab oil embargo and the gas hogs could be bought for practically nothing, along with just about any musclecar back then.
With Cadillacs the saying was, "If it don't say wood, it ain't no good".

So I picked up a second '64, but this one is an LS. Now I have to pick which one I want to fix up. Fully optioned LS or just heavily optioned Holiday? Holiday has some rust but better interior, LS has solid body but nasty interior. Thoughts/opinions? Both are yachts but wife says one of them has to go to parts.

do you have any pic's of the second car posted. Many times it is easier to exchange interior but depends.I for instance have one car that has little to no interior so I will have to figure out what I want to do.The blue one doesn't look all that bad but body work can be a real pain and doesn't always hold up here in the rust belt of ny.My blue 67 has rust issues that need to taken care of but the funds arn't there.

As soon as the snow clears off I'll snap some pics of the LS. It got demoted to a tarp. Ultimately though, I suppose I like the Holiday lines better, but I have to decide if it's worth all the body work. I have no doubt I could swap out interiors, though the LS is brown and the Holiday is blue, the only thing that I couldn't change is the dash.
