Interesting - I never heard of a car being failed to tire size. Around here, about 1/4 of the cars out there have the wrong sizes!
I only heard of tire condition being a safety inspection item (tread depth, cracking, etc.)
What state are you in?

X2 on that tires size disqualification. What were you trying to run P145/80R12????

Mo is in Germany. Orig size was J78-15 or JR78-15. Modern equivalent is 225/75R15 or 235/75R15.

And we just think inspection stations here in the US are dingy/clueless over old cars.

The Germans are very picky about their Autobahns and what gets to drive on them. A quarter of the cars in this country would probably fail. I used to live in Berlin and those highways are fantastic. History Channel has a great show on German Autobahns which shows how fanatic they are about them. You'll pay upwards of $3000 just to get a license there and the driving test is brutal.

TripDeuces is correct. When I was in Germany in college alot of my younger friends didn't even have driver's license.

Hey guys,

you are totally right about that

And yes it is very very hard to get the car licensed. We have 2 different options for cars olds than 30 years here:
-Historical registration: Car must be >30 years but completely original, except for some safety aspects. Then you also get some approvals like for MPH gauges and missing seatbelts. It is also very cheap, costs only 190€ per year.
-Normal registration, cost 40€/100ccm for cars without catalysaor = 3000€ = >$3500

What I had to do:
-Swap front lights to European standard H4 instead of high-beam
-Change parking light from yellow to white
-Proof that engine is matching
-install red reflectors on rear bumper
-fix battery (fixed installation)
-put VIN intro frame
and some other stuff that I probably forgot

If he is in Germany, then that explains it then.
We need their driver's tests here in the states. We at least need an iq test. Those with iqs lesser than their hat size shouldn't be allowed to drive.

It is sort of a bummer that the rules are so strict in Germany. However, at least they lay the "smack down" on drunk drivers. I think we are way too easy on drinking and driving in the US.
