Edelbrock Performer & 4bbl too High on Full SIze???

I just got finished putting my Edelbrock Performer & 4bbl Qjet on my 425. Now the factory air cleaner is actually hitting the underside of the hood. Its just slightly rubbing on the underside of the hood but I am still able to close the hood.

I noticed the carb gasket is almost 1/4" thick and could prob get the clearance I need if the gasket was thinner. Are there different thickness of carb gaskets? Has anyone else has any problems with clearance with this combo?

Here you can kind of see how high the whole thing sits

Does anyone know if the Tornado ever came with an air cleaner base that would work with this air cleaner top? I know they are lower.

I am really trying to find a suitable way to lower the air cleaner assembly while still keeping the stock appearance.

I've heard the Toronado uses a drop base air cleaner. I would think that it would work with the top of your current air cleaner.

I noticed you didn't have the distributor cap on in the picture. Are you using points or HEI ignition? I don't think an HEI distributor will clear the drop base Toronado air cleaner.

You can get thinner carb base gaskets. I think the Toro set-up is a matched a set but not sure.

I think I may have it figured out. I will just get an aftermarket drop air cleaner base and use the factory top. That way it will be lower but still have somehat a factory look.

Good deal. You can always paint the base the same color and nobody will know unless they look really close.

Should even need to paint it. The original air cleaner is larger than 14" so you shouldn't even be able to see the base when its installed. Now I just need to find a drop base that will clear my electric choke.

I had the exact same problem when I installed the Edelbrock Torker with a throttle body when I installed the fuel injection. The clearance was so close it rubbed when the engine rocked with torque. I place a small rag in there for a while to prevent the rubbing marks on the paint but finally gave up and installed a 10" chrome aftermarket air cleaner and put the original Olds name plate on top of it. I couldn't drop any lower because all the controls were in the way.

Very nice setup. Since our cars are very similar (at least from the cowl, forward), how did the 425 like the upgrade to this setup? How about the install of the linkage?

I would guess there are ports that go to the distributor and the transmission? How about the ease of tuning these carbs?

What did it run ya? Where did you get the parts from?

Thanks for reading my relentless questions. I have been considering losing my old 2 jet.

The intake was $110, the carb was $360 taxes in. Rebuilt from http://www.carbrebuilders.com/ in Toronto. I made the throttle linkage $6.

Qjets are awesome carbs. Prob not the easiest to tune but once you get the hang of it they are awesome.

Awesome, thanks. Have you taken it for a spin since the install?

What did you do to the linkage?

Yeah I have taken it for a spin. It was pretty fun let me tell you!! LOL

AS far as the linkage goes I used the factory end piece on the pdeal side & got another ball joint end from Princess Auto. Picked up a 1/4" steel bar, cut it to length & threaded both ends.
