I think that any place that sells used cars can do the appraisal for the MTO. All they have to do is fill out a form that they have from the ministry of transportation.
One thing I really like about Alberta, no tax on used cars or private sales.

cutlass xombie - Good looking car. Looks like you're going to have a lot of fun filled days ahead.

For insurance, I have to get an appraisal every 3 years. One copy for the Ins co, one for me. Nice thing about digital tech, I actually get 4 copies of the report (each hardcopy c/w pictures includes a cd with the electronic version for easy storage or distribution through email.

Hmm, thanks for the reminder. I'm due for another appraisal too. Nelson Bender did my last one and went over he car with a fine tooth comb. Gave me suggestions on key areas to work on for next appraisal. Crap, this process never ends does it?

Here in Ontario only Diplomats and Indians are exempt from paying tax on used vehicles.

My mechanic bought a mustang last year and did a total restoration on it over the winter. He bought it for $12,000 and after the restoration it was appraised for $58,000. The ministry of transportation wanted him to pay tax on the appraised value not the price of the car before the resto.

Make sure you take some parts off the car or tell them that the engine is siezed before the MTO appraisal so it will be worth less.

Good to see you finally got the car. Good luck with the appraisal. But for the insurance, verify that they accept appraisals from the person/company that is doing it. I have heard sometimes, they will not accept them from all places.

Many classic car insurance companies will have a list of accepted appraisers.

What the heck is that all about? You have a 2 tier tax system on cars? A crap rate and a luxury rate? You're gov't is retarded. Dalton McGinty needs to screw his head on straight.

By Diplomats he means Foriegn Diplomats. Both they and Native Indians are tax exempt.

Yes Allan welcome to Ontario's screwed up gov't. It's an absolute joke when it comes to used vehicles in particular classic cars. Dalton and his band of thieves sniffed out money opportunities with regular folks like us and wants to bleed everything he can. You can go from one MTO office to another and you'll get 2 different answers as to how to pay tax on these cars. Was a real education for me so that next time I know exactly what to say and what not and in particular how to describe my vehicle in such a manner as not to pay more than I should.
