New member here...

I have been lurking for a few weeks and am excited at the wealth of information I’ve browsed thru already! Starting to formulate a plan for a ’68 442 that has been in various states of storage since the early 90’s. I’m sure we will have questions as we move thru the project… look forward to interacting with the forum and using the experiences of others to help along the way.

Only have one pic handy... from when we brought it home to my place and rinsed it off. It has a long way to go... but it's a complete car and should be fun to return to a drive

Thanks all! We will have questions for sure. Right now reading up on heads, exhaust manifolds, heat risers and such. Good stuff.

Well... while reading up on exhaust manifolds tonight and comparing casting numbers... one thing lead to another and we discovered our 400... is not a 400. A surprise to both of us.
Suppose we will have to start digging to find out what we really have and consider our options

Did any of the '68 442 have a SBO in them? All the documentation I find so far says no... but I know that there were some odd production variations mentioned in different threads.

Thanks all!

Welcome, nice car, all 68 442's had a 400, I think... Wait how about Hurst Olds'? I think yours should be a 400, but other more knowledgeable people will pipe up. Put the #'s and pic of data plate on here and they will get it all figured out for you.

Does your vin on the dash start with 344? What's the casting # on your engine( it's behind the water pump between the oil filler tube & the oil sending unit, it has 6 #s. It's not uncommon for a SBO to find it's way into a 442 after someone blew the motor. To answer your question only '64 442s had a sbo 330 but no '65 to '71 442s came with a small block, only big blocks, 400s through '69 & 455s for '70-1

VID decoded as: “1968; Oldmobile; 442; 2dr Convertible; Lansing, Michigan”

Which is appropriate… discovered that somewhere in it’s past, prior to joining our family in the early 80’s, it appears to have had the 400 BBO swapped out for a SBO of unknown size. The care had been stored so long and we never really had a reason to doubt it was not original… lessons learned 😊

Looking at a possible replacement candidate,a BBO, this afternoon or tomorrow.

Data plate... what's the location of that tag? I'm still learning. *** Disregard, I found this quote on another thread here in the newbie area: "The body or data tag is on the driver side cowl under the hood near the windshield. It will have paint and interior codes as well as a little more information." -4Speed455****

Thanks again!
