Need help with fuel pump!

I am going to change over to an electric fuel pump. Can someone offer some info on this project. What brand, where to mount, do I need a fuel pressure regulator? It has already been converted to electric wipers.

Welcome I am assuming we are talking about a first generation Olds here (50 through 60 something) and why do you want to go to an electric pump? It's been my experience that they don't last as long as a regular pump and all the ones I have used have made quite a bit of racket. Other than that mount it near the gas tank on the frame rail, insulate it with some kind of rubber grommet (most come with some ) and it goes there because it will push gas farther than it will suck it. Be careful how you wire it in because if you are ever in a wreck and the engine dies the pump will continue to push gas into an already bad situation.....I would put in a regular fuel pump if it were mine...Just my thoughts ...your millage may differ...Tedd

Sorry. 1956 Super 88. I believe my fuel pump is shot. Coming home this morning, I was going uphill, she started to chug like out of gas and stalled. waited 10 or so mins., started, got a mile or so down the road. Same thing. Now it will not start. I changed the in line filter that the previous owner installed. Still nothing.

I agree with TT. But, if you have to go electric, its not a big thing. I went with electric, until I had the time/resources to rebuild my mechanical pump. I use the electic as a back up. Mount it on the frame rail near the tank, and all should be ok. You won't need a regualtor if you buy the pump with the correct PSI for your application. I think my electric pump is a "MR Gasket" from A-Zone-Universal". Not the best, but served me well as a back up. The pump is around 7 PSI if I remember right for a 1963 Olds with a 394. Don't use it much now, but It worked fine until I rebuilt the mechanical one.

Just another thought , have you checked your oil lately? If not do so before you put any miles on it, you might have a blown diaphragm and that gas you weren't getting to the carburetor might be in your crankcase now. If it smells of gas or is very thin don't run it or bad things can happen....Tedd

A quick check for a bad fuel pump is to undo the carburetor fuel line, pull the coil wire then place a coke bottle on the gas line and have someone turn the engine for about 10 seconds, a good pump should fill the bottle about 1/2 way or more, if not you got a bad pump. There is a chance that your pump is good and something else has taken a dump...Tedd

Thanks everybody. I have not started again. I will check oil tomorrow. I did pull the coil wire loose and turn it over and got no gas in the carb. Also no gas in glass bowl.
In reference to the use of an electric pump as a back up. When then mechanical pump is functioning correctly, the electric is turned off and fuel just passes through it with no restriction I should worry about?
Also the previous owner installed an in line fuel filter just in front of the passenger rear tire, and there was not a filter in the bowl. Is this ok?

I would check the fuel line all the way back to the tank. If there is a hole in it or the rubber lines the fuel pump will suck air.

Do you know the condition of the tank? You could have a build up of crud blocking the line out of the tank. Do you have gas getting to the pump? You could crack the line open there to see if its getting gas or not.

I checked the oil, no gas in oil. I have ordered replacement mechanical pump from Fusick. I will get back when I get the pump and install it. Thanks for the help.

Hopefully this will fix your troubles, be sure to ensure that the rest of your fuel delivery system is good too, as mentioned. Fuel tank, hoses and lines, etc. Welcome to CO.

You should order a re-build kit as well. The pumps aren't to bad to rebuild. Just watch when you turn the retaining nut from the bowl that you don't twist it off. Soak it with some good penetrant first…ask me how I know…
