motor identification
I recently found a 1946 olds 2-door fastback, stored for the last 15years. when i lifted the hood i found it to have a newer olds motor. I think it could be around a 1955. my question is by just looking at the motor is there anyway to tell the year ? If not where did they put the numbers ? The rocker arm covers are green with yellow "oldsmobile rocket" written on them. I bought the car, and they gave me a parts car a 1947 4-door. The interior in the 46 is in very good condition. I'm an ol streetrod builder but my expertise is in model-a's and chevy small blocks so this one will be interesting to get back on the road. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to CO
What a great find, I have a 48 fastback and Oldsguy has a 46 so your in good company. Sounds like you have a 324 ci 55 or 56 I would guess. Does it have a 4 barrel carb?
Where are you located?

Haven't started the car yet to see if it runs, but I'm sure it will. Since it sat for all those years I'm soaking the cyliders for a few days before starting it up. If it runs good, I'll leave the 54-55 ? motor in it. If not I'll go with a big block Olds. But it will strickly stay olds. ----- Lew Panopulos

Good for you. I hate to be an "Olds Facist" but it just ain't right without a rocket in it. Good idea to soak those cylinders, maybe turn the crank with a big socket by hand to just to make sure those cylinder walls are slicked up.

1947 olds fastback for sale
With regret, I am going to sale my 1947 olds fastback. It has a 1956 olds engine in it. the body is in very good condition. It comes with sunviser and skirts, gangster whitewalls and good interior except for the head liner (the threads have gave way and it sags ). It includes a Wiend dual quad manifold with wcfb carbs on it (it is not on the motor.) Also I am throwing in another 1947 olds 4-door fastback for parts (no motor or tranny) It is also in good condition. Can be built-up. Also a new wiring kit goes with it. The reason I'm selling it is, my knees are giving out and I can't do the work like I'm used to doing. I already have a 1930 model-a streetrod and a fully restored 1948 chev aero sedan. I hate selling the olds, but at 67 years old I've seen alot of cars restored in my garages and it's time to just enjoy what I have. I have no sons to pass them on to or grandsons who give a ***** they would rather drive rice-burners. So, I want someone to buy them that would enjoy them and pass them on to their offsprings if possible. I am asking $10,000 for all. I can easily sale these cars in Europe, since I have allready sold 6 cars to the Danes, But I want these oldsmobiles to STAY in the USA. If anybody is interested ? call me at 1-801-278-3308, or 1-801-455-8052 (cell) or e-mail me at bettylew@hotmail.com I'm Lew. If your not interested --- please pass this on. thank you-- uncle louie
